Invasive fruit flies detrimental to Kingdom’s mango exports
22 Jan, 2018
Cambodia’s mango shipments have been routinely blocked before making it to the international market, with the Ministry of Agriculture claiming the mangoes are not of a high enough quality to meet the sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) requirements necessary to ship outside of the Kingdom.

According to Hean Vanhan, director general at the General Directorate of Agriculture, the main obstacle for Cambodian mangoes making it to the international market has been the prevalence of fruit flies, which infest prospective shipments of the produce.

“It is not a matter of the quality of our mango – the main obstacle to the market is the fruit fly, which blocks our mango exports and makes it difficult to achieve SPS certification,” he said, adding that the SPS certificate could only be granted to shipments of mangoes devoid of “injurious pests”.

Cambodia’s annual mango production is about 1 million tonnes, Vanhan said, but the Kingdom will continue to be cut off from surrounding markets until farmers manage to rid their produce of invasive flies.

“This fly is a species that spread into Cambodia through fruit imports, and now we need to strengthen our control of imports at the border in order to prevent other pests like these flies from entering the country,” he said. “Farmers will face higher costs of production now, since they will have to use new techniques in order to prevent these flies from infesting their fruit.”

Kampong Speu fruit processing factory breaks ground
1 Feburary 2018
Construction began yesterday on a $10 million factory in Kampong Speu province to process fresh fruit for international export, a first for Cambodia, though Agriculture Ministry officials could not confirm it would meet international standards yesterday.

South Korea’s Hyundai Corporation Group broke ground on the 3-hectare factory in Phnom Srouch district yesterday, in the hopes that it would enable Cambodian fruits to be shipped abroad without first being sent to Vietnam or Thailand, as is currently common practice.

The factory is set to open in September and will process 1,700 tonnes of fruit in its first year of operation, according to Hyundai representative Lee Changhoon.

“First of all, we will start from mangoes,” Changhoon said, adding that the company hoped to eventually process 50,000 tonnes of fruit annually, including coconut, durian, and mangosteen.

“Our market is not only Korea. Hyundai has 44 branches in worldwide, that is the strong network for export our high quality food of Cambodia,” he wrote in an email yesterday.

Hyundai Corporation inked a deal with local mango producer Mao Legacy Co Ltd in November 2016, and the two companies combined have about 2,400 hectares of mango farms in Kampong Speu, but there has never been a sanitary and phytosanitary processing plant to enable international exports...

Well, hurrah. Food processing is a neglected industry in Cambodia as we all know. Let's hope it is just the start of diversification.

Germany-led meet seeks to get produce to China
28 March 2018
- Germany’s international development agency (GIZ) held a workshop on Tuesday that promoted Cambodian agricultural exports to China, focusing on the necessary export guidelines and the sanitation standards that are often lacking in the Kingdom’s agricultural value chains. “We have compiled export guidelines for certain products that have potential to benefit from trade with China, such as mangoes, bananas, and longan,” said Florian Miss, program manager of economic cooperation for GIZ’s sub-regional initiatives in Asia.

One of the main obstacles for exports to China are certificates guaranteeing the products meet sanitary and phytosanitary standards (SPS), which according to Miss can be difficult for many Cambodian farmers to obtain.

Hean Vanhan, director general at the Agriculture Ministry’s General Directorate of Agriculture, said China is strict about requiring SPS certificates for all imports, and many local farmers have yet to adopt standards necessary to acquire this certification.

“Our smallholder farmers have to grow their crops based on the requirements of [export] markets,” he said, but added that many farmers were not yet in compliance with the requirements.

One way to streamline that process would be to form cooperatives, Vanhan said, in order to ensure individual farmers weren’t taking on the burden of exporting goods alone.
One such group is the Kampong Speu Mango Association, which has been trying to clarify the rules surrounding SPS and get its members certified for several months.

They are currently growing and ripening on our trees right now. We do not have a big orchard, but we have four varieties. Tumeric mangos are considered to be third quality, but their advantage is that they yield fruit twice a year naturally without the need to spray hormones. They are also a popular addition in some local dishes while still green. Insects are indeed a problem as are heavy winds and rain. All mango trees are beloved by red soldier ants (angkroang or locally n'kroang) which form nests out of their leaves. Locals believe they are responsible for pollination. Their bites are not deadly, but reasonably painful. A kilo at the local market sells for 15,000 riels/1 kilo. And damn near everyone has a couple of trees in their yard.

I should add that heavy winds and rains aso take their toll on the fruit. Once they fall the are bruised and at best only half usable, certainly not export quality. Ko
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

Keo romeat mango to get standard

May 9, 2018
The government will issue a standard for the type of mango known as ‘keo romeat’, a move that seeks to bolster sales abroad as well as consumer trust on the product, a high-ranking official revealed yesterday.

Chan Sopha, deputy director general at the Institute of Standards of Cambodia, told Khmer Times that they are cooperating with farmers and other relevant stakeholders in the industry to establish the new standard, which entails collecting information on everything from size and colour to common diseases and pollutants.

According to an early draft, the standard will be based on weight, size, grade and colour, as well as factors that relate to farming and processing, including commonly found chemical residues, hygiene standards in plantations and packaging conditions.

The new standard will be in accordance with World Trade Organization and Asean regulation when it comes to sanitary and phytosanitary standards, ensuring safety for the consumer.

As usual, there is much optimistic talk on possible markets for Cambodian mango exports, but very little action to help mango growers.

Local mango planters can still depend on EU market: Exporter
August 7, 2018
Despite the failure to export to China and South Korea local planters can expect a boost in the exportation of fresh mangoes to the European Union (EU) provided they have quality products, said an exporter yesterday.

The demand for local mangoes in the EU is increasing and that will also increase the rate of shipment, said Mong Reththy, president of the Mong Reththy Group, which owns the subsidary firm Kingdom Fruits International (KFI).

He said his company has seen an increase in orders, but with the limited supply of quality mangoes, they cannot meet the demand.

“Year on year, orders of mangoes have increased. They [buyers] have asked us to ship more mangoes, but we don’t have enough products to meet their demands,” Mr Reththy said, stressing that the quality of mangoes planted and harvested in Cambodia is limited.

“The exporters have markets, but don’t have enough quality mangoes for export, and there are farmers who have mangoes, but they don’t have the market,” Mr Reththy lamented.

Cambodian treatment facility approved for export to South Korea
Publication date : 2/13/2019

The Hyundai-owned fruit treatment facility in Cambodia’s Kampong Speu province said the company is ready to export mangoes to South Korea following fruit treatment inspections.

According to Hyundai Corporation (Cambodia) Co Ltd managing director, Lee Chang-hoon, the inspections were supervised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries’ General Department of Agriculture, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Cambodia and Kotra Korean Business Centre earlier this month.

Department of Plant Protection Sanitary and Phytosanitary deputy director Heng Chhun Hy on Tuesday said the treatment facility could meet Korean phytosanitary requirements.

“By what we oversaw, the treatment facility is ready to export to Korea. The facility uses the latest model to control pesticides,” he said. “This will add more value [to the fruit] – especially mango – which is a potential for exports, and also we will be able to export to other destinations.”

Hyundai’s Lee said the first step was a complete success: “The most important point is to get permission from the Korean [Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry’s Animal, Plant and Fisheries’ Quarantine and Inspection] Agency in order to export to Korea.”

The company plans to export 1,700 tons to Korea in the first year, and plans to eventually increase fruit exports to 50,000 tons – including coconut, durian and mangosteen.

According to phnompenhpost.com, the Hyundai Corporation inked a deal with local mango producer Mao Legacy Co Ltd in November 2016 to supply the fruit and the two companies combined have about 2,400ha of mango farms in Kampong Speu province.

Cambodian mango farms inspected by team from Korea

Five Cambodian mango farms were inspected by Korean officials in March, but the results of the inspection have not been made public yet, the Ministry of Agriculture revealed this week.

From March 25-29, a delegation from Korea’s Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) visited Cambodian mango farms and completed sanitary and phytosanitary inspections, the ministry said in a statement, adding that Cambodia hopes to export the fruit to the East Asian nation in the near future.

The firms that underwent inspections have a combined 1,008 hectares of land to grow the fruit, the ministry said. In Chayvan, president of the Kampong Speu Mango Association, said he hoped Cambodian mango will soon be shipped to South Korea.

“Cambodia and Korea signed an agreement on the exportation of mango many years ago, but no shipments have been made because there is a shortage of processing factories, particularly vapor heat treatment facilities,” Chayvan said. “We have an agreement, but we lack the know-how on using fertilizers, harvesting, cleaning, and packaging, so exporting to South Korea is still not possible.”
