Avocados

Post by vladimir »

When I was a kid, we used to stick matchsticks into avocado pips and put them in water, then they would grow quite well and we would transplant them.

It doesn't seem to work so well here (the matchstick/pip stage).

Why?

Do avocados need to be grafted onto stronger root stock, like mangos?

It is just too hot here, avo's need a cold period to become viable. Chuck them in the fridge for a while before putting them in the water. But don't expect a vigorous tree...

Ah, that would explain the lack of fruit.

And perhaps a larger fridge may help...

Sometimes the avocados have been sprayed with fungicides or pesticides. I imagine that doesn't help them to be more fertile.

How many avocado trees can you fit in a fridge ? Try A/C ? ;)
They grow better in the highlands.
