Westerner may face 7 years in prison for yanking open aircraft door.

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

I can’t speak for the Hairbrush, (they’d have to meet the same criteria) but the Boeing- no. Well, not unless you have a really, really unfortunate set of circumstances all occurring at the same time, which would be exceedingly unlikely. More unlikely than trump being universally popular, or history forgetting the brexit debacle.

Differential pressure at altitude means the internal load on the door would exceed the strength of even a great many humans trying to pull on the handles, assuming that the handles could even withstand that force.

Emergency exits, lock when the takeoff is initiated. Of course you’d want to be able to open them on the ground, but it’s bit of a task.

From the photo, it’s an overwing exit that this dufus appears to have opened. I’m sure the airline and ground agents will get a stiff telling off for having someone-
-so intoxicated, allowed to board in the first instance
&
-letting the prat sit in an emergency exit window seat in the first place
&
-not rethinking this bad choice when he was checked by the cabin crew. (Thai smile do brief the overwing occupants in their obligation as I recall)

The airlines get really pissed off about the costs. That plane will need to be emptied and the door checked for damage, properly refitted by a mechanic and then probably have to undergo a ground level pressurization test to make sure it is properly sealed.

You don't want to find out that it is not sealed as you pass through 10,000ft and the cabin wont pressurize and the oxygen masks drop down. Very expensive to take off and have to come back and also very dangerous... hypoxia... remember Helios Airlines Flight 522?

This all takes time and time on the ground is money. Lot's of money.

I reckon this twat will spend a bit of time at His Majesty's Pleasure. Six months in one of Thailand notorious prisons should gave him a proper attitude adjustment.

Going a little over the top, methinks.
Those doors do get removed. It’s not as if you have to gut the airframe. Simply get the self loading freight out of the way. It’s a 10minute job if you haven’t got the knack. It’s not like he actually threw it out of the hole which is what you are meant to do in an emergency. Now that would have been an interesting outcome.

As for spending time behind bars- it happens all to rarely. Excessively drunken passengers cause so much trouble. Lock em up. Throw away the key. Deny them food and water. Just as if they are in a low low cost...

Fair enough FD.

I do agree about drunken passengers that routinely cause so much grief for passengers and staff. I cannot understand why the airlines don't get together and create their own 'no-fly' list. Governments have them for terrorist suspects. Why not for drunks who cause fights in flight and force them to divert to offload them.
A 2 year 'no-fly' punishment, enforced by every airline from your home country will make people think twice before getting plastered. If they do it again make the next ban for 10 years.

Evidently the chap in question went insane for a while (at least).

More of a psychology problem than a criminal one.

Good work from the cabin crew.

Must have taken them by surprise..

It certainly would have surprised me if I was on the flight.

That is a very practical solution. :thumb: and not excessive either.

It doesn’t happen because accountants want maximum revenue, and stopping one customer may mean the loss of more dross. They just leave it to the poor cabin crew to deal with.

There are tales I could tell, and they would be just the tip of the iceberg.

Must be quite a sight to see those poor 55 kg cabin crew in their tight skirts manhandling a crazy barang in such a confined space.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

His punishment should be to serve self-entitled Indian passengers for six months. Far worse than seven in the nick.
