ED visa holders must actually attend class now

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

ED visa holders must actually attend class now

Post by Soi Dog »

4 days per week - 2 hours of class per day? Fuck me. That sounds like work.
I don't quite get the 15 day extension before a 75 day extension part. More fees? Lots more hassle, anyway. And school fees are bound to double. They used to offer 4 hours class per week for about 20,000 baht per year.

New ED Visa Requirements & Extension Rules Now Also Enforced in Pattaya

According to a thread on ThaiVisa.com, starting from next week, i.e. February 2015, the Chonburi Immigration office on Jomtien Soi 5 will enforce the same strict rules regarding the requirements for ED (education) visa holders and ED visa extension as immigration on Phuket and in Bangkok.
That means that, for example, Thai language students holding an ED visa will have to attend classes four times a week for two hours each, or for eight hours per week in total.
Also, when extending their visa for 90 days, ED visa holders will initially be given only a 15-day extension from now on. At the end of this 15-day "evaluation period" students must go back to Immigration and will be granted another extension of an additional 75 days. That means that for each 90-day period ED visa holders must visit immigration twice.

totally agree with this;
the ed visa has been used/abused for far too long.

Here in phuket they are staring to ask people flying in with ED visas some questions in thai and god help ya if u cant respond.

Prices will go up for sure,
it was never as low as 20,000 , more like 24-28,000

I paid 17,000 baht for 15 months of visa coverage in Bangkok up to 2012. 2 days of class per week required, 2 hours per class.

I dont get it. Why would people choose to live in place where they are obviously unwelcome?

The women? The weather? The food? The relatively low cost of living? The government bullshit has only recently become a problem. Cambodia is also waking up to the reality and upping their visa requirements.

Most farangs have the means to overcome government obstacles. What country isn't trying to limit the penny pinching bottom feeders and focus on the more financially stable guests? I benefitted from the loosey-goosey visa requirements for years, but the times they are a changin' and no sense bitching about it much. It is what it is.

did that include the cost of the visa? or only school?

I know some people that get deals ( a friend of mine pays 15,000 baht for the school) but the average cost for the school is as i stated, here in Phuket

Cost will need to increase as the teachers will need to work more and need to obviously get paid more so the cost will be passed on to the student.

Its NOT they don't want you, they don't want you to work here without the correct visa and there is nothing anywhere for those under 50 that do have money

Hehe, they even want you to take their bs seriously.

not satisfied with shearing the sheep, they want to make them bleat as well.

Aren't you moving to Cambodia shortly? You are therefore willing to take the Cambodian government's BS apparently. Do you think any such visa changes won't happen to you there, eventually? They are changing as we speak. Ask poster taabarang. Don't be surprised if Cambodia and Thailand have the exact same visa rules before too long.

I think it would be brilliant if immigration set some compulsory tests for those on the ED visas and if you didn't show the required test progress you were refused another visa, go home and put some more hours in. That would throw the cat amongst the pigeons :))

If all the Non serious ed visa utilisers turned up to class you'd probably have to institute detention for the drunken fights breaking out amongst pupils. :D
