This is kinda heavy, even for Thailand

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Laser pointer reasoning was that 1) it could have partially blinded the pilots - look at the safety label on a laser sometime - clearly says do not point because of risk or blindness

And reason 2) prelude to something nefarious - like a ground to air missile guidance system.

Kids have been used by gangs and terrorists in various countries as spotters precisely because the cops don’t go after them.

The selfie? Possibly fears of casing the airport and getting photos of the security set up?

St.Maartens airport doesn't seem concerned about people on the beach.

And what do you think Boeing will be dowgraded to after its latest acts of corporate homicide, with the collusion of of the FAA licensing debacle? Safety lapses are not totally the prerogatie of thirs world countries. there are greedy bastard prepared to kill for a profit in th west as well
No one is absolved. Boeing very likely accelerated (whistle blowers) the MAX development due to the Airbus NEO release by bypassing certain items, like adding the MCAS stuff to the pilot manuals and making two vital monitoring items as "optional" equipment. They will not be optional now. Boeing guilty as presumed. Boeing is virtually guilty of murder.
No "maybe ' about it. Boeing AND the FAA are guilty of vehicular homicide at the very least. When you take deliberate risks like they did, bypassing what should have been failsafes then it is as deliverate as driving home drunk - you hope you will get away with it but you really don't give a damn. Someone has to go to jail for this

So I read the article for you... because, you know, facts. The Daily Mirror was basically just regurgitating an article in the Bangkok Post, which is, and I looked this up for you too, an English language Thai newspaper. Strong clue also in the name.
Me, not that other crap.

More sensational news that is really only about site traffic ( sort like the bat shit thread otof)

As Phuket moves slowly into low season, a story published in the international media by the US-based Fox News about how tourists could face the death penalty over taking photos at the island’s airport is a highly flaw piece of sensationalist fake news.

Clearly there is no likelihood that the Thai authorities will apply a legal maximum penalty under the Air Navigation Act for tourists posing for selfies as airplanes land. More likely would be a charge of trespassing and a fine.

Clicking into Google this morning the story is now running with the New York Post, MSN and other news outlets abroad.

What is distressing is to see how news providers sensationalize Thailand and Phuket with little regard as to the consequences of the economic impact of such a story.

For most readers, what they will remember when reading such a piece is only the headline about Phuket, Mai Khao Beach and the death penalty.

What a sorry state of affairs mainstream news has become.

Step back for a moment and recall how it was the (brainless, moronic) airport authorities who made this threat. The lesser media are going to jump all over this, of course. (Is it any wonder the FAA dropkicked Thai civil aviation authority back to Tier 2 in February?)

Just realized this is the first time in years I read a Fox news story. It was actually, sort of, balanced.

Anyway, I'm sure we all recall the idiots who thought they could use boats to send water quicker down the Chao Phraya River during floods. Or sending up drones to clean the air pollution. Or spraying water into the air at ground level to clean the air. Or clearing all the vendors from Bangkok streets and thus destroying one of its greatest tourist charms. Etc. Yup, the same class of bozos.

This shows the contempt that the Thai FAA holds for pilots. Sure they're pussyhounds, but pilots are very professional especially during critical phases of flight such as take off and landing.

PHUKET: Thanee Chuangchoo, General Manager of Phuket International Airport, today (Apr 11) dismissed reports circulating in the international media that taking selfies on Mai Khao Beach near the runway will incur the death penalty.

Mr Thanee called the spurious reports “incomplete”, noting that they focused on the most serious of punishments available under the law reserved for those who endanger lives.

“Taking selfies or pictures of aircraft while standing on Mai Khao Beach will not incur the death penalty,” Mr Thanee said.

“But if people take any action which is harmful or disturbs the piloting of any aircraft, such as distracting pilots by pointing laser pens at them or flying drones in the area, such behaviour will see the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) invoke the law,” he added.

“In my opinion taking a selfie is okay,” Mr Thanee said, but noted that he is not directly involved in the particulars of expanding the “safety zone” at the end of the runway.

Mr Thanee explained that the reports of death penalty were considered so ridiculous that he was initially asked to not even respond to them.

He also pointed out that attempts to have the beach area at the end of the runway sealed off in years past were headed off by provincial officials who said they wanted to keep the area open to the public as it was a very popular tourist attraction.
ions and Maintenance Group), announced that the “safety zone” around the airport will be expanded.
