Thailand Versus Cambodia

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

i find my general cost of living cheaper in thailand, thailand can be more expensive but usually comes with better quality/smoother service
but there has always been something about Cambodia, a certain raw charm that ive always loved,
i love both places, equally, but for different reasons, my lifestyles are pretty different in both countries, so i cant compare

Number one thing why I live in Cambodia and not in Thailand, is the easy to get 1 year visa here.
In Thailand visa policy is something else...

When it comes to the Thai and Khmer people attitudes towards F(B)arangs, is that we are mostly tolerated 80%.
Liked 10% max / disliked, hated, etc. other negative responses 30%.
Major generalisation or not.

I'm living in this part of the world because of the weather anyway. I do my best to avoid and ignore natives with based on experience.
Foreigner also. I've become antisocial loner and I love it.

Wouldn't it be easier to be an antisocial loner in one's own country?

No judgement, serious question.

I think that's nonsense. With most regular Thais, you get a fair chance. If they dislike you, it's because of you, not because of you being a farang. Institutional xenophobia is another story, but how much does that really affect the typical farang living here? Not very much, from my experience.

I don't blame you for your view though. It's easy to focus on reports of blatant xenophobia, while kindness or normal behavior towards foreigners usually goes unreported. Personally, I've been very happy with how I've been treated here in Thailand, and not only during this pandemic, but also for many years before. Then again, I do know which types of people to avoid in Thailand - I'd avoid them at home just the same.
Spot on. Thais don't hate folks because they are farang. Many Thais will look down on farang though, as they wrongly? assume that the majority of them living there are chasing cheap beer (which seems to be a common theme in this thread btw) and cheap girls. Who doesn't look down just a little bit on people like that? To re-locate half way around the world for that makes anyone look like a bit of a dud - but that's OK if that's what's driving your ambitions in life. Middle-class Thais will treat a western couple completely differently to Barry the bus driver from Birmingham and his Issan missus partner from the outset. It's blatantly assumptive unfortunately, but it is what it is.

Thailand is simply better value for money as many in this thread have stated. It doesn't make it better - just different. Drag it back to what normal folks look at, which isn't the price of beer btw - consider housing, utilities, education & food and its pretty easy to see. Similar pricing in some areas, but the quality delta is massive.
You know that tingly little feeling you get when you really like someone? That's common sense leaving your body.

I wouldn’t live anywhere without a Burger King , we go eat there often at least 3 times per week ,
.. the kid won’t eat rice , lives on cheese burger 🍔 only from BK , won’t eat homemade burgers or vegetables,
Just cereal , cake and ice cream 🍨
He got every super hero from the kids meals

Do people actually travel the world and rate the countries by how good burger king is?

Cheapest beer 65 bhat = $2 on a good day
Hotel 1000-1500 bhat = $30-50
Food in Cambodia is definitely more expensive and less quality than in Thailand.
Just go to the Burger King in Thailand and in Cambodia and compare the prices.
Who the fuck goes to thailand or cambodia to eat at Burger King
Some people have kids, and for comparison's sake it is an interesting case. Same product, one in a richer more developed country and one in a poorer neighboring country. Whatever expected (Thailand being more expensive) isn't the case.
