BANGKOK, Oct 7 (TNA) – The resort island of Phuket has postponed reopening to foreign tourists until the end of the Vegetarian Festival to create confidence among local tourists.

Deputy Director-General of the Department of Disease Control Dr. Kajornsak Kaewcharat said the first group of 150 Chinese tourists, earlier scheduled to arrive in Phuket on Oct8 will come after Oct 25.

Utterly bizarre, if they can't even decide when to let in a couple of hundred what hope is there? Doesn't really send out the right message to anyone thinking about going through the considerable hoops and expenses to get here that your trip could be postponed depending how the wind of public opinion is blowing any particular day.

Will you feel any safer in 3 weeks time Richard when they turn up? It makes zero difference surely.

well they than have 2 weeks quarantine an then there out and about,
wont feel more or less safe......

FYI:
ALL the money they spent for tests, flights, hotel accommodations is NON refundable as well

It’s been reported in Khaosod English that the Thai government won’t offer them refunds for accommodation, insurance, flights, along with any other costs they had incurred so far to obtain their STVs
Yuthasak Supasorn, the TAT governor, says the arrangements for their travel should be treated as a postponement, not a cancellation.

“…there’s no need for those refunds, because their trip is not cancelled, it’s just delayed.”

I think they will have to accept that 2020 high season is basically fucked!!!, most normal family holidays are booked months in advance, time off work flights hotels are all booked well in advance of actually going on holiday, nobody will have gambled thousands of dollars on the off chance that the Thai's would sort something out, if they lifted all restrictions tomorrow ( which won't happen) Thailand would still only get a trickle of the normal footfall through the airports, maybe a few farangs on a shagfest to Pattaya but that's it

it has NOT been canceled, 1st group was ( 120 or 150 depends on ur source) due to arrive phuket Oct 26th AFTER the vegetarian festival ends.
so NOT cancelled, only postponed as i stated above

It looks like some embassies are now issuing 60-day single entry tourist visas again. Only 40 Euros. Please note, not for every country and you still have to do quarantine and hold $100,000 health insurance.

Call it an experienced hunch, but I don't think a plane load of Finns would cope too well with 14 days of quarantine and no alcohol.

The latest report says that in fact NOT ONE single Chinese in Guangzhou applied for an STV to go to Phuket.

Some 120 Chinese were supposed to have been arriving in Phuket last Thursday until an eleventh hour reason - the Vegetarian Festival - was given for the delay by the head of Thailand's security council.

The charter flight was virtually taxiing on the runway, it was claimed.

But now it has been revealed that the TAT had only supplied a list of names of those interested in coming to Thailand as part of the Special Tourist Visa (STV).

The onerous regulations that potential visitors must follow has led to the scheme being ridiculed online.

Foreign ministry spokesman Natthaphanu Noppakhun told the Thai media that NOT ONE Chinese person in Guangzhou had actually applied for an STV at the consulate there.
