Thailand Travel Restrictions and Info

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Dave, I totally agree. Of course it's their call if or when they allow UK tourists to enter. It's just good to know if there won't be any restrictions from the FCO, whenever that time comes.

Proposed travel bubble

Thailand proposes a 3 phase “travel bubble” strategy

Image
The move is reportedly to focus on safely reopening by using the areas of Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, Krabi, Phuket, and Pattaya, as experimental locations, which would allow tourists to enter at a maximum of 1,000 per day, without having to fulfill a 14. day quarantine period.

A travel pact or “bubble” with 3 distinct stages, is expected to be agreed to with countries that have had similar success to Thailand in suppressing the Covid-19 virus and that have gone at least 30 days without recording any new cases. Initially, it’s understood the arrangement will include China, Japan, and Taiwan.
NOTE: Bangkok not on the list so no idea how you get to these locations unless they allow you to transit Bangkok.

Cambodia and Laos happy as Thailand reopens 37 border checkpoints
Xinhua
Bangkok, Thailand / Wed, July 1, 2020 / 01:30 pm

Thailand will reopen checkpoints on the border with all neighboring states to resume cross-border cargo transport and trading from Wednesday, according to the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha.

CCSA decided on Monday to reopen a total of 37 checkpoints on the borders with Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia, so that cargoes can be transported and traders can be allowed to cross the border, said CCSA spokesman Thaweesilp Visanuyothin.

That is part of the phase-5 easing of Thailand's lockdown measures against the pandemic.

The Thai border checkpoints which will be reopened include 14 connected with Laos, eight with Myanmar, seven with Cambodia and eight with Malaysia, according to the CCSA spokesman.

Laos and Cambodia, particular, will be happy as they can continue business and trading dealings which has slowed down due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, tourists from the neighboring countries are not allowed to enter Thailand via these border checkpoints.

So maybe this could influence them in return? I'm from the UK but as we're still technically in the EU, I don't mind!

Hopefully the UK will give a 'green' light for travelling to Thailand on 6th July (according to this report below) Will have to wait and see if Cambodia will be green, amber or red, or even on the list. They should be green in theory though going by Covid numbers but that's just my opinion! This will determine if your travel insurance is valid, which is another crucial tick off the list. Let's hope for the best!

I can't see Thailand being flattered by the EU into offering reciprocal access to 420,000,000 people in the Schengen area. Nor do I think that the UK allowing Thailand access will induce the same response. If the infection rates were reversed, we wouldn't let any Thai's in.

As far as I am aware, Thai's have to jump through hoops the get a UK visa, so reciprocal travel is a bit misleading.

There's some more info in the Nation story:
Foreign tourists will be allowed back into the country in August under “travel bubble” arrangements, Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn confirmed on Thursday, (July 2).

After discussions with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and private operators on Wednesday (July 1), Phiphat will today meet with Public Health Ministry officials to finalise the list of “travel bubble” countries.

The countries will be proposed to the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) in the next two weeks, he added.
