Giving out food is all well and good, (they do it daily here in Kamala as well)
but what happens next
Lifting the quarantine wont mean there will be any customers nor will the places that catered to the tourists be opening anytime soon.
Agreed there is no quick fix, the Chinese will assist as soon as they can which will only help the connected/vested interest tourist trail tacky venues and get the island boats running again.. The popular quality bar/restauarants supported by expat residents all year round will open as normal and have a low low season without the steady but reduced number of low season tourists. I'd imagine shopping mallls, retail outlets etc wil be deadly quiet for the rest of the year with the level of unemployment. 15-20% GDP tourist sector taking a massive hit and the negative muliplier effect feeding through to their customers. Grim, grim prospect.

Pattaya and Chiang Mai, Bangkok to some extent, will recover quicker as they are both cities with a large population and get large numbers of local tourists ( well, not the bars), many of the locals work does not depend 100% on tourists
Chonburi ....well lots of factories so it all depends on when their orders start rolling in, otherwise huge numbers of unemployed for awhile.
But places like Phuket, Samui, Koh Tao etc will be really hurt as we depend on foreign tourists and cant survive without them

It's easy to forget that the non tourist economy was on the slide prior to this outbreak, I was seeing the definite start of recession in infrastructure related businesses, and bigger industrialc ompanies were also shutting or relocating because of the strength of the currency within the region. The govt's public spending drive has disguised the downturn in foreign investmnent since they.took over and it was starting to visibly filter through. The current situation will just exacerbate the issue.

Slowing Thai economy, less construction so less migrant labour required from Cambodia and Myanmar. If the Chinese use the opportunity to swoop in on the cheap, I think there is already enougb surplus commercial and residential real estate to soak up demand especially with the likely closures in the coming year. The prospect of further Chinese takeover is a horrendous thought.

If the Chinese use the opportunity to swoop in on the cheap! It seems that is one of their specialities, to do so where ever possible for them, taking what they can without contribution to the said countries in most cases. I would say this would also grow now, taking advantage of a situation, causing problems for authorities in many countries with a knock on effect to other nationalities. Such has the turn in the visa rules in Vietnam.

BANGKOK (REUTERS) - Thailand has found the largest number of nests of rare leatherback sea turtles in two decades on beaches bereft of tourists because of the coronavirus pandemic, environmentalists say.

From wild boars patrolling the Israeli city of Haifa to deer venturing into London suburbs, virus closures are drawing wildlife into the abandoned streets of many cities.

In Thailand, with 2,765 infections and 47 deaths, travel curbs ranging from a ban on international flights to an appeal to citizens to stay home have brought a collapse in tourist numbers, but freed up the beaches for wildlife.

The 11 turtle nests authorities have found since last November were the highest number in 20 years, said Kongkiat Kittiwatanawong, the director of the Phuket Marine Biological Center.

"This is a very good sign for us because many areas for spawning have been destroyed by humans," he told Reuters. No such nests had been found for the previous five years.

"If we compare to the year before, we didn't have this many spawn, because turtles have a high risk of getting killed by fishing gear and humans disturbing the beach."

Leatherbacks are the world's largest sea turtles. They are considered endangered in Thailand, and listed as a vulnerable species globally by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

They lay their eggs in dark and quiet areas, scarce when tourists thronged the beaches. People have also been known to dig into their nests and steal eggs.

Late in March, staff at a national park in the southern province of Phanga Nga bordering the Andaman Sea found 84 hatchlings after monitoring eggs for two months.

The Governor of Bangkok is expected to announce an extension of the ban on the sale of alcohol to 30 April 2020. He will have a meeting this afternoon to discuss this and other issues.
