77kaoded reported that Pattaya's deputy mayor Patana Bunsawat went with his subordinates to erect signage forbidding use of public areas at Jomtien beach.

The media reported that many foreigners, many tourists had been congregating at the beach brazenly sunbathing, eating and drinking beer as if there was no Covid-19 crisis.

Same goes for phuket, bicycled along the beach road this morning and saw police arresting 4 farangs on the beach sitting on the sand..

any wonder why thais are soon to be calling it the "farang virus" :stir:

Well as far as Jomtien beach is concerned from that report I'm afraid the media are lacking balance and is in this case another example of zenophobic scapegoating, and I would put any Thai calling it a farang virus in the same boat.

I've been doing a drive along Jomtien beach in the morning and late afternoon every day for the last fortnight to monitor the situation. I see no need to distinguish between race as is it has been a mix of people still frequenting the beach. A rough guesstimate yesterday morning I would say maybe 60-80 people along the main 4km stretch.

I'm not surprised at the narrative that is being pushed, however if anyone has followed the growth of cases throughout Thailand since the start the source of cluster spread is nothing that would support it being a " farang virus", I would actually say quite the opposite in Bangkok for example.

Since everyone is in this together it's a shame to see any media reports playing the race card.

A 10-day ban on the sale of wine, beer and spirits in the capital Bangkok went into effect on Friday. Some 47 of Thailand’s 77 provinces have implemented bans to April 15 or until the end of the month, the interior ministry said in a statement.

So, by deduction, the other 30 provinces in Thailand are still selling alcohol...

Yep but I think maybe more may follow suit by tomorrow night. We're still able to buy in Chonburi Province but within much stricter hours, I think it's the normal 11am to 2pm and then between 5-6pm.

Following up from yesterday’s report there has been no action taken to remove a Facebook page advocating violence against “shit tourists” stranded in Phuket. ‘Spotlight Thailand’, usually a ‘whistleblower’ for local corruption and fuelled by the admin’s political views, has nearly 600,000 followers.

The posts, perhaps intended as a bad joke, incites local Thais, disgruntled with losing their jobs and being cooped up during curfew hours, to take matters into their own hands and use a slingshot and rocks to ‘pick off’ tourists if seen outdoors.

The disturbing posts, shared and liked thousands of times, started on Monday. The Facebook page posted photos of ‘farang’ tourists driving around or visiting Phuket locations in a ‘shame file’, and calling the page’s followers to shoot them with slingshots.

^Yes totally aware of all those high profile attacks, that's what I meant by the narrative that is being pushed by some and concerning when it's at govt level with that absolute disgrace Anutin. How is he still in a job after even criticising the medical staff dealing with it on the frontline.

I agree with you, and I think the longer it goes on and the worse it gets economically for the local populace I can only see further scapegoating in our direction whenever a chance presents itself.

I was thinking I would be looking forward to when things open up again but before the tourists start coming back, but then I thought with locals still facing prolonged hardship sitting in an open bar. with lots of foreigners celebrating the chance to enjoy themselves again, it might create quite a bit of resentment on the street. I would imagine a lot of pent anger could be released on someone who says or does something not too diplomatic.

Spoke too soon with my earlier reply, brought in an immediate ban last night in Chonburi Province until April 30th. Didn't give any notice so there was no chance for anyone to rush out and bolster supplies. I knew I should have bought another case!!

I hardly drink anymore, haven't been to the bars in a few years, and don't chase the girls (already have a great one). But, being a 62 yrs old adult male and reading that the govt clowns are forbidding me to buy beer and whisky!?

This is not about stopping Covid, not about health, this is worldwide, this is becoming a police state, this is a psyop, this is brainwashing. I know that may sound out there and tinfoilhat like, but there's no logic to the actions govts are taking.

I think there is paranoia from the Thai establishment that the economic hardship the masses are facing could be the straw that breaks the camels back in terms of the Military dictatorship dressed up as a democratically elected government of the people. Let's not forget that the first step in this gradual and accelerating clampdown was to ban public gatherings just as the student protests at the banning of the Future Forward Party were gathering steam.

When they announce assistance of 5,000 baht per month and in the end it appears the number of people actually qualifying and receiving it is a fraction of applications its not a good sign.

I've always believed in the mantra of " It's the economy stupid" in terms of the Thai establishment being able to continue to control and run the country for their own benefit, I've a feeling this year is goin g to put that to the test like never before.
