Thailand Travel Restrictions and Info

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

CDC Issues Travel Notices for Several New Countries Including Thailand and Chile Due to Coronavirus
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have raised their travel warning for several new countries to a Level 3 — their highest alert level — on Monday amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

According to the CDC, travelers should avoid all nonessential travel to Thailand, Chile, Pakistan and Turkey as the countries are “experiencing widespread ongoing transmission of a respiratory illness caused by the novel (new) coronavirus,” according to notices on its website.

“Widespread ongoing transmission means that people have been infected with the virus, but how or where they became infected is not known, and virus transmission is ongoing in many communities across a country or region,” the notices read.

Oh great, we know how much you love Phuket...

Now, given this is a Thailand topic and most members DON'T live in Thailand, you want to derail it seeking replies and comparisons?

Restrictions in Thailand and Germany, but not for king Maha Vajiralongkorn
Thai king is said to live with around 20 women in a Bavarian hotel

The four-star hotel "Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl" is currently home to a prominent guest, for whom the general regulations are happy to be relaxed. The luxury hotel is said to have applied for a special permit at the district office so that the hotel can remain open for the Thai king Maha Vajiralongkorn.

Vajiralongkorn, also called Rama X., is said to live with around 20 women plus staff in the hotel.

And so you want to start a pissing contest discussion with members on who feels safer?

Really, what planet are you from and you really need to get out of your bubble and show some compassion and understanding for others.

These are unprecedented times and already we are seeing members who are 'stuck' unable to get home. I suppose you are going to argue the case that they should've taken steps to mitigate that and return home? Well, some might have and others by circumstance may not have. I know myself I had a only a 1-2 week window of opportunity to return to my home country before borders got shut but rightly or wrongly chose to remain in PP. Others may not have been able to make that choice in the time available..

Yet, there you are in Phuket smirking how safe you feel..heartless I have to say..

Tourism in Thailand and Cambodia take a virus hit

Southeast Asia is facing the possibility of billions of dollars in losses from the sharp drop in Chinese tourists since the COVID-19 outbreak.

According to a report by global audit, tax and advisory network, KPMG International, the risk of a global recession in 2020 is extremely high as nations shutdown economic activity to limit the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A report by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), outlining the economic impact of COVID-19, stated that, “tourism arrivals in many developing Asian economies are expected to decline sharply, as a result of numerous travel bans as well as precautionary behaviour.”

Dismal Thai tourist arrivals

Thailand anticipates the loss of five million tourists this year, taking with them "250 billion baht (over US$8 billion) in revenue", according to Don Nakornthab, Director of Economic Policy at the Bank of Thailand. In February, tourist arrivals in Thailand dropped by 77 percent, 99 percent of cancellations were from China. Thailand receives an estimated 10 million Chinese visitors each year.

Several stimulus packages have been proposed by the Thai government to help ease cashflow in the sector. One of which includes 100 billion baht (US$3 million) in soft loans for tourism-related operators, to help workers in the industry with daily expenses.
Cambodia’s disappearing tourists
The Cambodian government has reported a 60 percent decrease in the number of tourist arrivals since February this year.

Ticket sales at the famed Angkor temple complex in Siem Reap have fallen between 30 and 40 percent this year, while Sihanoukville, a southern beach resort notorious for its casinos, has seen a massive reduction in Chinese tourists and residents.

“Since early this year, almost 80 percent of Chinese nationals living and working in Sihanoukville have left,” said a local landlord who is also a civil servant.

“A major difference between this (COVID-19) outbreak and the SARs outbreak is that the Chinese economy is much larger and more integrated with other Asian countries

In early March, Prime Minister HE and Tith Chantha, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Tourism, called for more Cambodians and people living locally to travel domestically during their holidays.

While the 'authorities' in Cambodia have denied there is a plan to shut down phnom penh

Prayut declares a Covid-19 emergency in Thailand
Health risks are giving rise to political ones that could prove fatal to Thai democracy
BANGKOK – Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha announced today (March 24) that Thailand will be placed under emergency rule to curb the spread of Covid-19, a draconian measure that could have significant implications for the kingdom’s recently restored democracy

Soldiers are expected to return to the streets to enforce imposed curfews and travel restrictions. Prayut warned in announcing the emergency that online criticism of the government’s response, now viral over social media, will no longer be tolerated, as was the case during his coup government’s heavy-handed rule.

Prasit Watanapa, dean of medicine at Bangkok’s Siriraj Hospital, the kingdom’s most influential royally-affiliated medical institution, said on March 23 in a surprisingly open press conference that Thailand’s Covid cases were rising 33% daily and that over 7,000 could be expected to die from the disease by April 15 without a stronger lockdown.

As of March 24, Thailand had reported only four Covid-19 related deaths, though the government’s official reporting has come under skeptical scrutiny amid a recent rash of suspicious pneumonia-related deaths in the country’s northern region and an initial impulse to prioritize the economically crucial tourism industry over public health
Prayut’s ability to contain the disease with his new emergency powers, seen by some as his last tactical card to play to maintain the premiership, will likely determine his own political fate. Before the emergency announcement, Bangkok’s diplomatic and other chattering classes were speculating about a possible change at the top to better handle the crisis.

One scenario sees King Vajiralongkorn intervene to appoint an emergency premier, with Privy Councillor economist Ampon Kittiampon’s name widely bandied, similar to his deceased father King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s appointment of a technocrat prime minister to restore order after soldiers gunned down pro-democracy demonstrators in May 1992.
