Thailand's #2 In The World In .........

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Thailand's #2 In The World In .........

Road fatalities/capita. ..... http://m.bangkokpost.com/news/736748?re ... Dt3_3porix ......"In its 2015 Global Status Report on Road Safety, the UN health agency said 14,059 were killed on Thai roads and highways in 2012, translating to a road-death rate of 36.2 people per 100,000, a rate only surpassed by war-torn Libya, where 73.4 people per 100,000 died that same year."
"Thailand's traffic-death rate was only even approached by Iran (32.1 per 100,000), Togo (31.1) and nine African countries that posted rates between 30 and 35."
"Furthermore, the WHO concluded, road fatalities in Thailand were far higher than reported. Based on its models, the agency estimates 24,237 actually were killed in 2012, 42% more than stated by the Public Health Ministry".The lack of standards is particularly noticeable in Thailand, which lacks a child-restraint law, performs no safety audits for new road-construction projects, carries out no regular inspections of road infrastructure, and has no policies to separate motorists from pedestrians and cyclists."
"The WHO also noted that Thailand's national seat-belt law does not apply to all passengers in a car."
"The agency also gave poor marks to enforcement of existing laws, giving the country's traffic police a three on a scale of 10 for their enforcement of speed limits. Police earned sixes for enforcement of drink-driving and motorcycle-helmet laws."
"Yet the status report said only 52% of motorbike drivers -- who accounted for 70% of all road and highway fatalities - wore helmets and only 20% of pillion passengers. That mark, however, was a significant increase from the 3% recorded in 2007."

It make me wonder what the numbers for Cambodia would be...
The enforcement bit: maybe minus 3, lol?

I should think Vietnam would give Thailand a run for the money if it wasn't for lousy record keeping.

I found Cambodian stats and they're < half as bad as Thailand, 17/100,000....... lying muthafuckahs ! VN apparently lies slightly less 24.5/100K.

Of course Cambodia's figures are lower than Thailand's. % of vehicle ownership per capita is way less in Cambodia than in Thailand. If they were equal, Cambodia's figures would almost certainly be higher.

^^^^^ Moto riders and pedestrians make up 52% of fatalities though. Knowing this, your point would predict far higher rates here not lower. There's huge under-reporting here obviously.

No. Moto-riders and pedestrians die more often when they collide with larger vehicles. You're much less likely to die being clipped by a moto than by a Volvo. With the relative absence of larger vehicles in most of Cambodia this explains the lower fatality rate. By your logic the place you should be most likely to die is somewhere where cars were banned completely.

No the most dangerous is when the majority is on motos, bikes, walking by the road, and you have some cars, trucks, and buses. Just drive PP-SV and this becomes evident. That is why Africa dominates this list. Thailand's high car ownership should keep those people safer also. As we've seen so many times here, one, bus, truck, or car can kill many on bikes. 2 cars hitting eachother usually does not end in fatalities. The problem in Thailand is that nobody uses seatbelts. I don't know, maybe you're right, but they're still lying muthafuckahs, the drivers, roads, and riders here are terrible. There's no way deaths are < half that of Thailand. I'll go back to the report at some point and see what the correlation between car ownership and deaths is. I bet it's in there somewhere. I'll report back later.

Cambodia has few highways and I should think considerably more people still have pushbikes or walk than in LOS.
