Thailand sold itself as a pardise during covid> NOBODY came LOL

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

There are some exceptions, but nearly every foreigner I've ever met who has come here from Thailand has been a seedy, exploitative asshole. They speak some idiotic bar girl pidgin and have very high opinions of themselves, even if they are just two-bit ex-crims. I don't associate with them and it's easy to avoid them so no big deal.
In reality there is hardly any difference between the expats residing in Cambodia or in Thailand !

They've even spoken pidgin English to me, FFS, in Thailand. And "seedy, exploitative asshole" is a pretty good roundup of the Pattaya type. No offence, Cowshed Cowboy.

Lol none taken, you know me I'm a fairly laid back individual, I laugh at all the typical stereotypes that get banded about. Most of the guys I know from over the years worked in professional careers around the world and took their R&R in Pattaya enjoying golf and the nightlife, happily settled mostly with their own properties and a comfortable standard of living. I believe we are the invisible majority to the Pattaya critics. I don't associate with the group's mentioned earlier.

On the subject of pidgen Thinglish I agree with what JB said earlier, I cringe when I hear it and I've seen guys writing it similarly on Facebook comments.

I remember when I was staying in Charlie Harper's in Sihanoukville one night talking to Tony and my neighbour at the bar and this Scouse guy sat down and started talking to us. He must have lived in a Thai village with zero foreign contact for a long time as he talked to us in the worst most pidgin Thinglish I've ever encountered. If he ever made it back to Liverpool God knows what his friends and relatives must have thought. Truly bizarre.

You know, I probably should have said "a pretty good roundup of 'a substantial' Pattaya type." Mostly found lounging around Soi Buakhao/New Plaza/Arunotai. I lived on the Darkside among a very sociable bunch, which is why I stayed there for a few years. I have a feeling Jomtien where you live would be similar.

Agreed and it's why Central Pattaya has been pretty much been dead for a year, not many living "here" actually live "there", as it's the worst area to live a normal.life. It's tourist central with the associated nightlife and attracts the "traditional" market. Nothing wrong with that, I was in that market years ago, but to live here long term not a chance,. Get up to the beach areas of Naklua, Pratumnak out to Bang Saray and you see a totally different side to the place.

I'm not into these new Instagram venues that have the Bangkok hip vibe with prices to match but there is an international market apart from the Bangkok Thai crowd that frequent them who wouldn't be seen dead In the Central Pattaya nightlife venues. I like the variety as long as the traditional friendly.beer bars of my youth don't get priced out. Sadly there is an inevitability about it as you know who move in, 5 more years would be good.

Thailand will never be able to reverse it's primarily mass market budget tourism model in my view, the wider economy is not in a position to absorb the excess labour that would be out of work currently and the military junta in power are completely clueless how to run an economy outside of self beneficial mega public works.

I find it fascinating to see how long the elastic band can be stretched until it snaps.

They'd probably think he was quite posh :)
