I love train travel and have done more than a few over the years
The Trans-Siberian
Amtrack from DC to SF
Aswan to Wadi Halfa, Atbara & Khartoum
CM-Bangkok over night
Kolkata to Delh
a few, ( 6-22 hour ) rides in Myanmar, sometimes walking is faster but a real treat

The trains in India are amazing. The route down to Aswan through Egypt was great too. My favorite train journey was from Dar-es-Salaam to Kapiri Mposhi in north Zambia on the track the Chinese built in the 1970s, it took a few days and part of it was through national parks with giraffes, warthogs etc. The student riots going on made it interesting too.phuketrichard wrote: ↑Wed Jun 20, 2018 9:14 pm I love train travel and have done more than a few over the years

Re: Thailand's hidden train repair yard.
I love travelling by train as well. Worst trip was from Goa to Mumbai. I accidentally missed my train (wrong platform, oops) and because it was then less than 24 hours until the next one I had to travel unreserved. I boarded a sleeper class hoping I could buy a ticket from a conductor, bedded down for the 12 hour journey only to get turfed out by a very annoyed Indian man about 3am. Spent the rest of the journey squashed into a piss smelling 30cm square on the floor in chicken class with my bags. Train ride from hell. Joys of travelling though, will never forget that one.John Bingham wrote: ↑Thu Jun 21, 2018 12:28 amThe trains in India are amazing. The route down to Aswan through Egypt was great too. Re: Thailand's hidden train repair yard.
took the train form cario to Luxor one year, went 2 hours before departure even thou i had a reserved seat.
some friendly Egyptians asked me why i was waiting, told them and they smiled and said ,"no not here" and walked me 1km down the track where the train was waiting an already 75% full!!!
trains have it over bus's any day, your traveling slow, people constantly getting on and off, stopping at often where people get on selling food and drinks
The Amtrack across America was amazing, they had an observation car with an all glass roof, nights with all the stars out were beautiful...
