Thailand bombs: Hua Hin resort hit by twin blasts

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

....Thai police have not singled the militants out yet, but police spokesman Col. Krisana Patanacharoen said Friday that the latest bombings followed "a similar pattern used in the southern parts of the country."

and they found another one today that didn't go off;
At 12:10pm on Sunday, an unnamed “good samaritan” noticed a strange clear bag hanging from a rail inside shop number nine of the Paradise Plaza night market on Rat-uthit 200 Pi Rd in central Patong.

An EOD bomb detection unit was dispatched to the scene, arriving by 1pm as the open-air indoor bizarre-style market – where clothes and souvenirs are sold to pedestrians from midday untill late – was quickly evacuated.

Inside the bag, authorities found a mobile-phone-cloth-wire contraption that resembled the same type of devices found in Patong on August 10, which the the regional police division commander in charge of the investigation initially denied was a bomb.

However, having failed to clarify what the device was, and considering that an actual bomb detonated in Patong on the morning of August 12, and in light of the description from a security guard who discovered one of the contraptions on August 10, many were left doubtful about the police commander’s initial conclusion.

However, the EOD bomb unit inspecting the contraption found today confirmed with provincial police superiors overseeing the inspection that the device was indeed a bomb that had failed to detonate.

Reporting to Pol Col Saman Chainarong, deputy commander of Phuket provincial police, a representive of the EOD unit, who asked not to be named, said it appeared that the contraption had likely been hanging on the rail for several days already, unnoticed.
and another one in Patong
Meanwhile, another contraption that resembles a pipe bomb was discovered this afternoon near Patong beach, in the area across from Banana Walk.

Announcing the arrest, Deputy Police Chief Gen. Pongsapat Pongcharoen called on the perpetrators of the deadly terror attacks, which injured 36 people to turn themselves in. Pongsapat said investigators are closer to identifying the mastermind of the coordinated attacks who they believe to be a Thai national.

He said an unspecified number of people have been taken by the military for questioning.

Pongsapat, who spoke after participating in a video conference with police from various provinces, said police have gathered various evidence including clothes, cigarette and phones.

The phones used in the attack were reportedly all from the same brand and model, Samsung Hero E1200, with labels identifying them as being purchased in Malaysia. Police are asking Malaysian authorities for assistance...

Travel Industry Downplays Bombing Fallout

by Hang Sokunthea and Ben Paviour | August 15, 2016

Travel industry experts said they did not expect a string of bombings targeting tourists in Southern Thailand to discourage visitors to Cambodia and downplayed new Ministry of Tourism numbers that showed stalling growth in foreign visitors during the first half of 2016.

The reassurances come after a string of at least 11 bombings ripped through some of Southern Thailand’s most popular beach destinations on Thursday and Friday, killing four people and injuring dozens.

More bombings have been reported Monday August 15:

Thailand's deep south hit by fresh blasts
NARATHIWAT, THAILAND: Fresh explosions rocked Thailand's deep south seriously wounding one soldier on Monday (Aug 15), days after a spate of bomb and arson attacks struck multiple tourist resort towns.

Last week's attacks have heightened concerns Thailand's long-running but local southern Islamist insurgency may have spread after years of stalled peace talks - a suggestion the kingdom's junta has been keen to deny.

A string of overnight attacks have highlighted how the insurgency continues to rage in the three Muslim majority provinces bordering Malaysia.

"One soldier was seriously injured from a bomb buried under the road" on Monday morning, Police Captain Wiroge Boonkae, from Bacho police station in southern Narathiwat province, told AFP.

Police said a further three blasts struck neighbouring Yala province, though no injuries were reported...
