Thai visa crackdown

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

I'm definately spending less time and less money in the Thai economy as a previous long term resident with a property there as a result of the visa chagesfor under 50's a few years ago. Maybe not a huge number of us affected but a sizeable minority I would guess. Having said that if I have to alter my plans slightly for a couple of years I see it as a small price to pay if they seriously address the slack enforcement of existing visa regulations and the resulting abuse.

This visa crackdown also happened in 2006/7. The Govt decided that you were only allowed 180 days in Thailand every year on the 15/30 day visas. I remember crossing at Poipet in Jan 2007 and they nearly went spare trying to calculate the days I had spent in Thailand as I commuted through there a lot. Also in Rayon at the same time.

Looks like that was only enforced for a short period and it will probably be the same short period of enforcement again.

I'm sort of looking forward to d-day to see what the actual impact is. How many long stayers are prepared to risk a border run knowing the likelihood is they will be refused.

no visa, cant get the right visa and think you can overstay for xxx days cause its only 20,000 baht MAX fine?

Think again!!!

bottom line, Thailand has been EXTREMELY too lenient for way to long, Name me one other country ( except Cambodia) where you have such lax immigration laws in Place.

BANGKOK: The website of the Immigration Bureau in Bangkok has today (22nd July 2014) posted a new announcement regarding its rules for overstay.

The announcement which is written in both English and Thai details the penalties for overstay as follows:

Overstay more than 1 year forbidden 3 years

Overstay more than 3 years forbidden 5 years

Overstay more than 5 years forbidden 10 years

In the case that alien is being apprehended

but how often do they actually catch people if they don't leave or they "lose their passport" before leaving?

Tourists on 'walk-in' visa entries to get 30-day extensions

PHUKET: The chief of the Phuket Immigration Office, Col Sunchai Chokkajaykij, has confirmed that his office has received an official order to begin issuing extensions of up to 30 days to foreigners who enter the country on visa-exemption status.

The order, signed by Immigration Bureau Acting Commissioner Sakda Chuenpakdee, is to come into effect from August 29, said Col Sunchai.

“Most foreigners entering Thailand on visa-exemption status are from countries whose nationals are allowed to stay for up to 30 days. Those entering via border crossings from neighboring countries are granted 15 days’ stay in the country,” Col Sunchai explained.

“Currently, both these groups of foreigners can apply to extend their stay at any immigration office, but only for a further seven days.

“But from August 29, these foreigners can apply to extend their stay at any immigration office for up to another 30 days – giving a maximum possible stay in Thailand of 60 days.”

Considering the recent changes to penalties for foreigners who overstay their permits in Thailand (story here), Col Sunchai was apprehensive about assuring the new 30-day extensions will be rolled out.

“There are some considerations that still need to be sorted out, such as whether or not the Immigration Bureau will issue 30-day extensions to foreigners who have been granted visa-exemption stays of only 15 days,” he said.

“But if we receive no further orders, this what we will do.”

Under the current order, from August 29, all foreigners need to provide in order to apply for a 30-day extension is:
1. The foreigner’s current passport plus one copy;
2. Completed application form for a 30-day extension to stay;
3. One photo, passport sized, to attach to the application form;
4. The application fee of 1,900 baht.
