Re: Thai Airways a microcosm of Thailand
Always loved TG and it has been my carrier of choice on my yearly trips back to Italy.
Apart from great schedule and being the most direct routing,I have always appreciated their customer service whenever I had the need.
Also they are one of very few airlines that have Boeing 777 with rows of 9 in economy class instead of industry standard with 10! It does make a difference!
Singapore airlines is also great but adds about 3 hrs flight time due to the backtrack.
So I wish them long life

Re: Thai Airways a microcosm of Thailand
I haven't flown Thai Airways since my work days in Indonesia in the late 90's, I could swap the value of a BA UK return from Jakarta every 4 months for a full holiday package as long as it was booked witb an airline. That was an expensive route at the time so I used to get a Bangkok return with a night in the Landmark Hotel round the corner from Nana, a Merc limousine return down to Pattaya and 3 weeks in the best hotels along beach road.
And then I decided for some strange reason to book LHR-BKK-LHR for my annual July-Dec return tbis year . I paid £495, but I'm totally confident I'll have to pay the same again to use my original ticket when things eventually open up.
In my eyes Thai Airways is perhaps the best example of an inept and corrupt State organisation in Thailand as there is. Who knows how much the Arab state airlines like Etihad, Emirates and Qatar are funded by their governments, but the big difference is the people in charge of managing those airlines are the top foreign industry professionals in the global airline business.
Can you ever imagine the ruthless Irish airline mafia of Willy Walsh, Micbael O'Leary or Alan Joyce being appointed to turn around Thai Airways, it would make for possibly the best fly on the wall industry documentary ever.
