Smokes in Thailand jump over 20%, beer next

The early reports this week said smokes would go up, due to a Thai tax increase, only 5-10 baht a pack for local and import brands. But maintaining the low standard of reporting, the papers did not consider it worth asking about the impact on import brands separately. Well, now we know from anecdotes today.

Yesterday and today, buyers of import brands were reporting a 25 baht/$0.70US jump for Marlboros to 120/$3.40US and 18-20 baht for L&Ms to 86-88 baht/$2.50US. That's a 20%+ jump in one swoop.

I have yet to be charged the new price for Mild Seven (a.k.a. Mevius from Japan) but probably looking at a jump from 98 baht/$2.80US to 123 baht/$3.50US.

Two commenters on the cigarette price threads reported separately news from wholesalers saying beer is next, but no numbers were given. I couldn't find any corroborating news items.

Thailand often raises sin taxes in the new year but this increase is just out of hand, no matter how you twist the impact of US dollar inflation.

I bought Marlboro this morning at 95 Baht... and wouldn't blink at 120 Baht either. Still much, much cheaper than back in Blighty where 360+ Baht a pack would be more usual...

Still bloody cheap! About 25NZD/590 THB/16USD for a 25 pkt of cheap brand cigarettes in NZ now...with talk of further tax increases!

I'd love to know where the whole 25 in a pack thing came from - it's true in Australia too but pretty much everywhere else in the world it's 20 in pack. The price of a pack of smokes in Australia nearly gave me a heart attack - I tried explaining I only wanted to buy cigarettes and not the shop that sold them and they didn't even crack a smile... In fact Australia was insanely expensive full stop - my mobile bill (which in Cambodia was on average about $5 a month for comparison) was hitting more than $100 US a week. Thank god for expense accounts is all I can say. Though I guess the weakening of the Aussie dollar has reduced the sting somewhat.

Canada has 20-cig and 25-cig packs. The 20s are about $9Cdn/$6.40US/225 baht for a premium brand. Can buy cheaper brands.

Australia is as expensive as you make it,if you goto china town in Sydney you can get malboros for 10 Aussie dollars and Vodafone were doing 500 mb's for 2 dollars last time I was there and that's with a 2 dollar pre-paid sim from 7 /11.

Just checked ... Vodaphone are doing 8 gig for 20 aud .

That's 14 USD for 8 gig pre paid.

Beat that.

Cigarettes and beer aren't necessities.

If the prices get too high, cutting back or quitting altogether are your best options.

Amaysim mobile uses the Optus network. I think I pay $60 a month for unlimited mobile calls, 5 gig of data and 230 minutes of international calls to 32 countries including Cambodia. Hard to better that even in Cambodia.
