Smog causes Accident in Chonburi

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Post by emm »

Driver says thick smog led to 3-vehicle pileup in Chon Buri

A driver in a serious 3-vehicle pileup in Chon Buri blames the thick smog for the accident, saying it limited visibility. Two people were injured in the accident, including a 30 year old man who was stuck inside his sedan and rescuers used the “jaws of life” hydraulic tool to remove him from the vehicle.

Another 39 year old man was found lying on the road and his 150cc motorcycle was nearly. Police say he had minor injuries. A 31 year old trailer truck driver told police that the haze from the air pollution made it hard to see.

Chon Buri’s air quality has reached “unhealthy” levels over the past week with the amount of the ultra-fine dust pollutant PM2.5 exceeding limits classified as safe, according to IQAir.

Relevance to Cambodia : The same "unhealthy" air quality was recorded all of the past 8 days in Kampot, Cambodia, too.

@John Bingham
The source for my claim about "unhealthy" air quality in Kampot is the irritation of my eyes, nose and lungs. People still burn stuff at the very bottom of Bokor Mountain (not the Mountain Slopes this time) and the air is filled with smoke which makes it difficult to breathe. Kampot covers a vast area and it may well be possible that other parts or even Kampot City itself does not experience the same problems.

As i posted before here is a source where you can see the bigger picture which due to the absence of air pollution measuring stations in most areas (if not all) here: https://www.iqair.com/cambodia/kampot

Sure, Chonburi is at 166 US AQI at the moment classed as "unhealthy" while Kampot is 76 and "moderate".

Part of the curriculum in the Cambodian school I worked at was the difference between fact and opinion, iirc that was in 10th grade. Opinions are introduced by phrases such as "I think...", "I believe", "in my opinion", etc.

Seems the OP wasn't lucky enough to have been brought up in a high-performing educational environment such as Cambodia.

Thank's for the englightenment. It's always great to have people of deeper insight and intelligence around.
Of course the air quality is changing during the day/night. You said "at the moment" the air quality is moderate which was at 11 sinething at night. If you had just ventured a bit deeper on the www.iqair.com website you could / should have seen that during day hours the rating jumps to unhealthy many times. You also did not take into account that i said "during the past 8 days" the air quality was unhealthy and my own experience but that doesn't count obviously.

To be fair, air quality in and around Kampot is surprisingly unhealthy for such a small place.

That is not really debatable. Right now I can see a haze in the daylight air as I look downriver at the new and old Bridge.

Burning bokor, unsealed roads, quarries, cement production, refuse burning etc all combine, together with prevailing winds see to that.

It's still pleasant enough, mind you.

Any excuse will do! This one is more entertaining than the usual "brake failure" at least!
