Shooting in Korat Terminal21 Mall Now

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Thank God it is over.
I am a little surprised at the "restraint" the Thais showed. i thought they would have just gone in Gung Ho and early.
No criticism, or any other commentary - just surprised.
Thanks for the reporting, Yong, and Richard.

RIP, all
and i hope their family's eventually find some peace too.
The Buddhist faith will probably help - "acceptance" is a very useful quality to have at times like this.

I'm surprised that this kind of thing doesn't happen more often. I guess serving in the Thai army, in itself, could drive a person mad - a braindead job, following orders of braindead superiors who have no honor day in and day out. But who knows, he might have had underlying issues beyond that - they wouldn't have checked or cared.

Thai prime minister says 27 dead, including gunman, 57 wounded, in worst mass shooting in country's history

aftermath

how the thai media failed us,
social media can be a good thing and also a very bad thing ( as we have seen with fake twitter and fb accounts out of burma which fueled the Rohingya killings) and fake reports concerning the corona virus still
Within minutes of the massacre, multiple live-streams were broadcast – from official news channels to unofficial live-streams from within and outside of the mall. Hundreds of thousands of people tuned in to watch. News broke – across Twitter, of course – that the shooter was using a hostage’s phone to watch the live-streams and track the movements of the authorities and other bystanders in the mall.

The revolution will not be televised, but the massacre will be live-streamed.

By 7:50 pm, the army asked media outlets to stop live-streaming the situation. Within an hour, the Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission asked all TV channels, shoppers, and workers to stop their broadcasting inside the mall.

However, live feeds of Thai special forces preparing to storm the mall were still being shared as late as 9 pm.

There is something alarming about the way that Thai social media has reacted to this massacre. Often times when we speak of the failure of social media, we speak of algorithms. It is no secret that posts with highly emotive content can better capture your attention and propagate faster – these are the posts that get prioritised on your Facebook or Twitter feed. Facebook, recognising the way the algorithm can work too well, has restricted violent video clips and photos.

But today, we are also seeing a failure of humanity. Content appears on the newsfeed – there is still a remarkable amount of agency that goes into clicking the “share” button. But videos of the victims’ dead bodies, screenshots of the shooter’s cavalier statements, live streams of the situation inside Terminal 21 and the authorities stationed outside the mall have been shared by media outlets and concerned citizens alike.

Absolute carnage. RIP all you poor unlucky victims.

Have to ask, why did it take 12 hours for authorities to bring in the armed specialists? 3 pm start of shooting, photos of special forces arriving posted at around 3 am. Possibly because there's no organization?

So now I got some information as to what lead to this carnage.

It has to do with a property deal went wrong. Gunman (dead) bought a property from the mother-in-law (dead) of his boss (also dead). Seems like the transaction met a problem with something like 50,000 baht. Gunman (dead) felt he got cheated went to boss (dead), boss (dead) act blur. So gunman (dead) posted about this (Facebook) for a few days even saying something like his boss(dead) is a deadman.

Now many who looked into his FB commented that this is a regular soldier who brings his mother go dinners, play with his dog etc etc just a regular guy. HIs friends also commented that this gunman (dead) is a very quiet person who keep things to himself so they found it strange for his to express his anger and rage in his FB. Inside his Facebook he even invited a friend to join him a day before it happened.

I do not have the exact detail but the above is probably a summary. Once I get more detail I will post.

By the way the final battle was fought between him and policemen (not army special forces). The gunman's final battle was in a cold room that belonged to Foodland (a supermarket chain in Thailand).

Besides him found dead in this cold room are another 3-4 dead bodies.

29 total killed,
This morning held a Virgil atthe mall with thai monks an many poeple atteneded.

This chronology was compiled from official and Thai media reports.

Thailand’s media is under fire from the government’s telecommunications regulator, the NBTC (National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission). Cable TV and other news channels, who ignored official orders to stop broadcasting and streaming of Saturday evening’s lockdown and storming of the Terminal 21 shopping centre in Korat, have been informed they “will face consequences”.

Some of the north east’s cable news outlets have come under criticism for their dynamic, live, visceral style of coverage, which regulators say could have compromised the security operations to rescue hundreds of shopper sand worker trapped inside the shopping mall after the armed gunman headed inside, shooting indiscriminately and taking hostages. Authorities complained that the gunman was able to follow the coverage of the security operations on his phone.

It is well documented that Thais are all generally braindead. But why do you claim they have no honor day in and day out? Please provide a link or furnish some evidence of that.
