Recoding Patpong.

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

What place does sex have in Bangkok’s future?

"Upstairs from the kink and flesh play of the Barbar Fetish Club, a small crowd gathered recently for a show very different from the usual bouncing, bored women or feats of genital dexterity found in Patpong."

"Christ, his apostles, and a last supper of booze, bongs and crack pipes sat alongside a pile of discarded Barbie dolls – a transgressive artist of the moment’s commentary on misogyny and sex-as-commodity. In other words, a big departure for a red-light district that’s gorged on that very formula for decades."

"It’s not a bold statement to say that Patpong has come across more desperate than fun for a long time, well before #MeToo convinced more people to err on the side of “maybe this isn’t OK.”

"The era romanticized by Bernard Trink-reading, white male “Nite Owls” is over, and memories are fading of what drew people to Patpong in the first place."

"The two sois were on their way to becoming an international crossroads almost as soon as the Patpongpanich family acquired the land in the mid-1940s. Swank hotels and lounges were followed by corporate offices for airlines and multinationals such as IBM and Shell Oil."

"It’s been a downward spiral since. Demographics changed, predatory scams proliferated, and curious tourists opted for Soi Cowboy instead, abandoning Patpong to the die-hards."

Actually, the really important question is:

"Is the Star of Light Bar still there?"

Now it’s a mix of genders. Gay, trans, straight people – everyone can party together around the arts.

There are just too many bad news coming our of Patpong for the past 40 years, wonder why people still wanna go there. I for one (a resident of Bangkok) do not even go near there and discourages visitors I know going there. Its such a dirty place as in literally dirty the streets the bars everything.

Patpong has none of the ambiances of Soi 6 in Pattaya or Bangla Rd Phuket were quality sexpats are found. As Phnom Poon has indicated the commercial sex buyer isn t really interested in partying with people different from themselves, except of course the likely young, brown-skinned, uneducated females that services their old, white and sophisticated selves.

I remember smoking smack at the Mississippi Queen. That lovely girl who was in The Deer Hunter lived in our apartment block. Noi? Richard will remember.
The Sugar Shack was a great bar when it opened. There was a grenade attack in Patpong one night, lots of broken glass and blood on the sidewalk.

There are just too many bad news coming our of Patpong for the past 40 years,
Mississippi queen, Grand Prix , Goldfingers were great bars back in the late 70's/ 80's Even the kings group before the lady boys took over.
When i was bored in the daytime would go to Superstar for steak sandwich and watch a video. Lots of deals went down in there.
At night would hang out with the Thai doormen of the clubs and when they got off work would ride till the dawn all over Bangkok, (i had a royal enfield than), many of them owned triumphs and bsa's
It lost its appeal when they put in all the tourist shit for sale in the middle of the road... Think that was sometime in the mid 90's
....Bangla Rd Phuket were quality sexpats are found
your joking ,right, only tourist go to Bangla road and its been that way for over 20 years

Did ya Know Patrick ( shrimp)? still a good friend living in Bangkok, his boat trips in Samui and Phuket were to die for>>>>>

The only places I would go to in Patpong are the Cosmos and the Madrid, both old school bar/restaurants of the Vietnam war era. And no, I was never in the military. However, it's a rare day indeed when I visit there because it's such a pain in the ass to get to and leave -- due lots of flat rate taxis and occasionally having to pass through police checks when the bloody RTP "officers" pull you out of a taxi and stick their hands in your pockets. Not to mention the destruction of Patpong 1 by the ripoff night market vendors. It's a miserable area.
