Phuket"Taxi Mafia" Hold Up Tourists Who Prefer Ride-App

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Phuket"Taxi Mafia" Hold Up Tourists Who Prefer Ride-App

Video of foreign tourists held up by Phuket ‘taxi mafia’ sparks probe
Phuket authorities have launched a probe after foreign tourists were seen being forced out of a van they had ordered via a ride-hailing app. Video of the incident went viral on Friday.

Taken by the van driver, the clip shows a man in a black shirt blocking the van and forcing four female tourists to get off the vehicle near Rassada Pier in Phuket’s Muang district.

The driver tries to negotiate with the man, who insists that the tourists use the taxi service at the pier. The stand-off ends with the driver asking the tourists to exit the van and apologising for not being able to provide them with transport.

On Saturday, Phuket transport office chief Atcha Buachan said the incident stemmed from a quarrel between the van driver and a taxi driver at the pier.
Atcha said the van driver had told the tourists via loudspeaker that he could not pick them up at the pier as there was a “taxi mafia” operating there. He asked the tourists to come to the van, which was parked outside the pier area. This angered the taxi driver, who approached the van, blocked its path and forced the tourists to get off.

Atcha said the taxi driver had been summoned to give a statement at the transport office on Monday. Muang Phuket police station has been notified and is helping to investigate the incident.

Those Phuket (and Krabi and Pattaya) taxi guys just don’t sign up to the concept of disruptive tech. They are going to keep things exactly as they are, thank you very much

this is all nothing new and has been going on for decades>
I know more than a few owners of dive shops and kayak tours>
Even thou they offer van pick up at their hotel for the guests, their drivers are often stopped from picking up their guests at their hotel>
UNLESS Money is paid to the taxi's, most business's that require pick up for their guests, have an "arrangement" with the taxi association

This has been a major thorn in Phuket's side since i first moved there in 85> government's ( both local and from Bangkok) have tried and failed to stop this but cant, cause envelops are passed all the way to the top in Bangkok
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Most tourist destinations have a local taxi mafia which results in short trips costing much more than the 8 hours bus ride to get there.
work is for people who cant find truffles
