Re: Koh Samui
l've just had 2 weeks in Lamai & Chaweng, left on the 20 Jan
Lamai is quieter than Chaweng as it normally is. I was pleased to leave Chaweng, just too busy, noisy & commercialised
Everything is fine, most places open
No idea what the nightlife was like
I mainly walked around, & got taxi's a couple of times. I don't use motorbikes at all, and didn't use the songthaew's, though plenty of them running all the time

Re: Koh Samui
I'm living on the next island Koh Phangan, after having been denied a visa by the Burmese junta to return to my teaching job in Myanmar. It's getting busier over here, mainly (it seems) with young male Russians. Most people rent motorbikes, including (maybe helps the OP), three-wheeler tricycle motorbikes for those who are not so hot at balancing on a 2-wheel bike!

In Koh Samui you can travel around in Songthaew or minivans used by the Locals.Doc67 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 24, 2023 1:30 pm Has KS recovered decent tourist numbers?
What is the public transport available if you don't ride bikes? Tuk-Tuk? or just bike taxis. I was thinking of a visit but when I was there last I had a car, but won't be doing that again so I was wondering how to get about without any use of bikes.
Any fun and games to be had there?
Otherwise rent a motorbike.
The Island still is worth visiting for a few days. Nice sightseeing. Chaweng is popular and nice beaches.
Last time I was there people chilled at the beach area, and partied at one of the beach side clubs.
Probably still good.
Samui has become quite developed though. I prefer the other Islands over it, for the less Touristic option.
More than just any old backpacker.

By trikes, I mean the sort of electric bike that old grannies ride in Malaga. Top speed about 15 mph....Ryan754326 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 27, 2023 4:48 pmTrikes are way more dangerous than bikes. Don’t let that third wheel fool you.

Oh okay. I was picturing something like the modified motorcycles I’ve seen over here, that have the rear wheel replaced with an axle attached through the swing arm. I see quite a few old men riding them.

What's a good place to go in the 90s like most of touristy Thailand it has gone downhill and the last time I went to samui hated it. Very expensive accommodation and the whole place totally set up to milk the tourist of every last dollar they can. Definitely avoid the place if possible Thailand has so many great places outside of the tourist traps.

Re: Koh Samui
In the 90's some 10'000 tourists arrived in Samu. Today you have 2.7M and cruiships puking out thousands of day tourists. For those who have old memories its hard to go back, for those visiting the first time it may be good fun.WillieW wrote: ↑Sun Jan 29, 2023 6:53 pm What's a good place to go in the 90s like most of touristy Thailand it has gone downhill and the last time I went to samui hated it. I had been there in the early 80's and worked there in the late 80's with a travel magazine
WE were going to stay 5 days and after 2 nights drove back to Phuket via Khao sok park which is great and stayed 3 nights there on the lake
its good for families thou as most resorts are beach front
Been riding bikes, ( and used to race motocross/trails when bones healed easily) since i was 15

Re: Koh Samui
Plenty of cheaper accomodation around, my usual hotel budget is under 1000bt a night normally, had no problem finding good accomodation for that price in Lamai & ChawengWillieW wrote: ↑Sun Jan 29, 2023 6:53 pm What's a good place to go in the 90s like most of touristy Thailand it has gone downhill and the last time I went to samui hated it.
