Hansum man turns out to be a dodgy Nigerian scammer;

Officers from the Crime Suppression Division have arrested and charged a Nigerian man who conned millions out of a string of Thai women in an online love scam.

The 35-year-old man, identified as Ben Raven, was captured on Tuesday afternoon at an apartment in the Lat Krabang district of Bangkok following an investigation into complaints filed by several women who claimed they had been conned out of between 100,000 to 150,000 baht each.

The women told police they had met and been chatting online for several months with a man they believed to be a handsome European who was coming to Thailand to be together in a relationship.

Each of the lovestruck women then handed over vast sums of cash via bank transfers when their sweetheart called to say he was detained at the airport with the million baht in cash he’d brought to start their new life together and he had to pay for it to be released.

At least three women fell for the lie and transferred the money only to never hear from the rogue Romeo again.

During questioning, Raven confessed to police he and a friend called “John” would chat with hundreds of Thai women on Facebook, Line and several dating websites. He said they would successfully snare a new victim every 1-2 weeks, adding his victims made bank transfers of between 10,000-400,000 baht each and that the money was split 50-50 with his partner in crime.

Several computers, mobile phones and bank books were seized by police and will be used as evidence in the forthcoming criminal proceeding.

Raven was remanded in custody pending a court appearance.

Good to hear about Thai women being scammed, as opposed to vice versa

where has this word Hansum come from? is it a joke about how Asian girls say it? or is it an Australian thing?

Sorry, but this is totally pathetic - Thai police have nothing better to do than babysit some stupid greedy women who get scammed while thinking they are scamming a rich European foreigner ? (With his 1 million baht in cash.)

In this instance I'm on the Nigerians' side. Some people are just asking to get scammed through their greed and stupidity. So don't whinge when you get burnt. If the guy had really turned up with 1m baht " to start their new life together", who would be the scammer then ?

No LS. They have never met. The Thai ladies have been chatting online with someone who has told them that he is a rich hansum man from Europe and that he is coming to Thailand to live with them/marry them. The women think he is a rich white guy, but really he is a poor black guy - it is the same guy.

This would be like if someone on FB or on this forum sent you a message saying that he is a rich, hansum Kiwi guy (for example), who wants to come to Cambodia to marry you and spend his money on you. You have ever seen him before, but you think this is a great idea because he says he's rich and hansum;
And then he says, oh LS, I have arrived at the airport from Kiwiland (for example) with my 1 million riel, but those corrupt customs officers won't let me leave the airport unless you transfer 100,000r to my bank account right now. Because you are a bit stupid, you don't even wonder why the hell he doesn't pay this money himself if he is so rich, and so you send the money to his bank.
Then he disappears from your life and you have a broken heart
Later the police tell you that your rich hansum Kiwi was really a poor Nigerian scammer with 3 wives and 10 children to support. You are really pissed off;
