Going on the run and hiding in Thailand

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

You need a passport with current stamps to even get a hotel room here. (Thailand) Try getting around it and you can have 4:00 AM visitors, be careful. Generally the love motels don't ask for a passport or id but might get suspicious if you were alone.

Prohibiting mass gatherings everywhere and ignoring the crowding issue at immigration offices needs addressing and shouldn't be that difficult to improve if there is a will to do so.
sensible? Thai immigration? Surely you jest> (you like to jump on me when i make stupid comments ) LOL
Not such a stupid comment then ye of little faith lol. Looks like the cabinet has just approved automatic renewals for those on expiring tourist visas. :thumb:

1 hour ago;
The Thai Immigration Bureau has asked the Cabinet to approve a measure extending tourist visas until June 30 for foreigners stranded in Thailand following the disruption of international flights due to the....
https://thethaiger.com/coronavirus/thai ... il-june-30

BUT nothing for those on long stay visas ( not 1 year extensions) about to expire

They did offer Automatic 30 day extensions for those that arrived AFTER march 1st
Deputy ministry spokesman Natapanu Nopakun announced that the cabinet has responded with a move to grant automatic renewal of tourist visas for visitors who arrived in Thailand after March 1. The proposal was approved by the cabinet yesterday and is set to be officially announced sometime soon. The situation will relieve a lot of the stress the visits to crowded immigration offices has been causing to tourists and visitors.

People who hold other types of visa, or who arrived before March 1, still need to go visit their nearest immigration office for extensions.

How Thai immigration have been handling this crisis so far is a total disgrace. Not a surprise to anyone who knows them, but still, it's shameful.

OK my theory on this.

Thais have tickets on themselves and are xenophobic. That's what they are taught at school from a very young age.. that Thailand is the centre of the universe. Foreigners are inferior and uncultured.

Yet...they rely rely on tourism for a very large part of their economy. So they tolerate that.

So what the Wuhan virus has done is expose their true attitudes and prejudices that would normally remain hidden behind that smiling, poker face. On the one hand, they're looking for someone to blame for their misfortune and who better than those barbarian tourists and expats that refuse to wear a mask? Yet, on the other hand, they are looking at a total decimation of their tourism industry..and the knock on effects of that to their economy and people's livelihoods.

So they are in a quandary...torn between wanting to do away with falangs coming there infecting their people or letting their economy go to ruin.. They just don't quite know how to handle their insecurities on this.. hence, they look like they are flip/flopping their way through all this..

Release the hounds.. :stir:

They give you 30 days each time but each time u need a letter from ur embassy (can be done by email)

Dont like it here? fucking leave, (if u can) go home
If they catch you without valid visa, you go to Police-jail, Immigration jail in province, then Immi-jail in BKK (Suan Plu) sitting with Indians, Nigerians, Chinese, etc.etc. like in a sardine-box, for how long??? You never know!
IF you get the money for fines, tickets, etc!!! maybe you can go. BUT You're gonna be Blacklisted for 5! Years!
Like you said Richard: If you don't like Thai, GO! If you're out of money and/or cannot get new cash you beter should't come here. No friends helping you? You did something wrong in life!
Not my problem anyway! I am waiting for the first Flight DMK to PNH, 'cause my G/F is there.I am switching countries 10 times a year, since she cannot
go with me to Thai, and I don't wanna leave here for. Now MR. M'Fokker COVID 19 is thwarting my plans, so I can only wait in Patty, which is nopro at all! Miss her anyway!
Today 22:00 until 05 AM CURFEW! Looking forward to! Take care and KEEP STRONG!

I think referencing that to the authorities you are correct to an extent. Part of the reason I've never believed in a dommsday scenario as a Westerner living in Thailand, such as Sigmoid has been propagating since way back when, is the government are stuck between a rock and a hard place regarding the revenue and job creation /dependency that foreigners both tourists and residents generate. We are seeing that in the utter decimation of the likes of Phuket and Pattaya.

I do wonder when the dust settles and people reflect on the way different countries have handled this with respect to foreign nationals will people feel quite the same towards Thailand. For me if I needed any confirmation, specifically the comments coming from the deputy PM/Health Minister which was never properly retracted or admonished by PM, it has increased my unease for the future and raises my own questions whether I want to be full time or more of a part-time visitor between here and other countries in the region.

In my mind having watched the situation develop the Govt have bent over backwards to keep the Chi ese sweet while waiting for an opportunity to start apportioning blame onto Western Foreigners wherever possible. I don't like being a default scapegoat in difficult times.
