Five Decades Of Nana
My first visit was mid 1982>>
Featuring Nana Plaza, Sukhumvit Road. The Story of Q Bar, The Thermae, Sukhumvit’s old nightlife history. Who was Buckskin Joe?
Cheap Charlies was where you went if you didn't know anyone and would make lasting friends over a beer
(old) Thermae during the 80's at 3 am was ............
almost like this

Re: Five Decades Of Nana
Well this brings back lots of memories since I first started annual holidays in 1986 through to about 2000 (Pattaya thereafter).
The original Thermae, Buckskin Joe and Nana (when the middle of it was just a car park).
My regular hotel was in Soi 11 but I did stay a few times at the Grand Palace Hotel...unfortunately it's 'palace' days were long gone. I remember being stuck there during Black May or Bloody May in 1992 with a nightly curfew. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_May_(1992)

Funny, Richard first went to Nana in 1982 and Clutch in 1986, years I also remember very well because I entered primary school and high school, respectively.
My first visit to Nana happened quite a bit later, but I still had a few good years before the decline started. My last visit there about two months ago was a rather sad affair, while Soi Cowboy was a lot more entertaining despite the pandemic.

Re: Five Decades Of Nana
Haha 1.44 mins in " The Dynasty Inn" about 100 yards on the left exiting Nana Plaza was my regular hotel from my early years in Thailand. Always used to stay a couple of nights arriving on a trip and then on the way out. They had a couple of regular taxi drivers stationed there who had comfortable and immaculately maintained old Volvo's and I'd get one of those down the road to Pattaya, usually asleep with a massive hangover.
Did an afternoon Soi by Soi walk the odd numbered side of Sukhumvit on my last afternoon when I was up a couple of months ago starting in Nana, I was looking forward to sort of mimi bar crawl down memory lane but everywhere was so deserted or closed up I ended up back in Phrom Pong without stopping anywhere. Very disappointing.
I miss the ramshackle old places that are being replaced by the concrete and marble new condos, shopping malls, hotels and office blocks. It all seems so characterless.

Re: Five Decades Of Nana
1989 was my 1st to Nana and Cowboy as a tourist...40 or 50 baht a beer if I recall...
Moved to BKK permanently in 1991 and had night time teaching jobs on Asoke...SINO Thai and Nedloyds are 2 I recall...Was mainly on Cowboy after teaching...Was pretty good back then for a 29 year old...and the price was right at the time...3 or 4 years later everything changed...

In the 90's I used to stay at the Atlanta Hotel in Soi 2. Great memories. Playing pool , drinking cheap beer, having fun. A complete different atmosphere than today.

My first visit to Nana Plaza was in 1993.
I still miss the burgers at Woodstock.
My last visit was in 2016. I was there about 10 minutes.
