First Trink, Now Stickman ;-(

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

First Trink, Now Stickman ;-(

Post by phuketrichard »

Ahh well,nothing lasts forver :hattip:

Life has a funny way of serving up the unexpected. On Monday I was reading positive feedback from readers about the previous day’s column. Two days later I was on the phone to Dave The Rave, fulfilling a long-held promise that he would be the first to know that the next Stickman weekly column – that is this one – would be the last. What happened?

Many independent, owner-operated, Thailand-centric expat websites have come and gone over the years. Many have been garbage. Some have been good. A few have been very good. The best were run by those who got out and about themselves, observed with their own eyes, had decent analytical skills and perhaps most importantly, made the effort to engage readers. MangoSauce stood out. BangkokBadBoy had its moments. Morally Diminished had potential.

This week the majority owner said that he would struggle to pay me for the rest of the year. The money is not the end of the world and I won’t go hungry, but I have to ask myself: is it worth continuing with it if I am not being at least partially rewarded for all the time it takes to put the column tog

It was a hell of a run ;-) ;-)

Stickman has been trying to sell for several years. TV was smart to inflate their numbers and get out on the high side.

Be aware that Stickboy's website is almost exclusively supported by advertising from The Boiler Room crooks nightlife conglomerate, which includes being the leaseholder to the whole of Nana Plaza, himself being the former manager at Bangkok Beat one of their operations. Essentially he's their mouthpiece/puppet, so don't expect any negative reporting in their numerous establishments direction.

They managed to get Andrew Drummonds interview with Stickman pulled a fortnight ago from the Stickman site due to threats to the owner, and I see the latest news as totally connected to the issue. Sad state of affairs that a couple of criminals have so much power and influence.

Looks like Stickman may not be quitting after all....

https://www.stickmanbangkok.com/weekly- ... g-goodbye/

"If you were hoping that this column would see me go out in a blaze of glory and dish up the dirt on and all and sundry, you’re going to be disappointed.

If you were hoping for a lengthy story of my life in Thailand and the history of this column, you’re in for a disappointment because that won’t appear this week.

And if you were hoping that after today you’d regain 20 minutes of your Sundays from now on, you’ll probably be disappointed too.

Today’s column is not the final Stickman column. Talks have been taking place behind the scenes….and that’s all I can say about that at this stage. I don’t wish to be coy and the truth is I really don’t know exactly what is happening myself. As soon as I know more and things become clear, I’ll tell you."

I am not sure what will happen next. The site will most likely stay online but there is a serious conversation that has to be had, copyright and contract issues that need to be discussed and I just don’t know what will come of it.

There is no grand finale column. Maybe I’ll save that for a book. Or maybe this is the end of Stickman entirely and I’ll never write another word as “Stick” after today.

To everyone who has tuned in over the years, whether you’ve been with me since the beginning or have been but an occasional visitor, thank you for being part of the Stickman community.
Your Bangkok commentator for the last time,

Stick

When i first went to Thailand about 15yrs ago someone told me about his site and I've probably read most of his weekly column since then, I liked the opening pieces he wrote but towards the end you could sense he was conflicted, seemed to dislike the scene he was writing about.
He should write a book about all the sleaze he would sometimes allude tobut would never totally reveal, that could be a right little earner. I would definitely buy it if only to make sure I'm not in it 8-)
