Famine Fear in Thailand

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Cowshed Cowboy wrote: Thu May 14, 2020 11:20 am I dread to think what the situation would be like in Pattaya if it weren't for all the private groups organising free food handouts. I walked along Jomtien beach road the other day and the queue of people gathering must have been at least a kilometre long and getting longer, young and old lying flaked out in sidecars. It's a really desperate situation.

I see nothing being done by the official authorities and with Thailand's vast and generally inactive military resource this is a situation they should have been mobilised to organise basic handouts to the needy. Not a job for the private sector. National disgrace.
I just can't imagine Pattaya being closed up and quiet with people queueing up for food handouts.

Anyone got any pictures of the street scenes at the moment?
It's sad.......

Hope this comes to an end soon....

This you tube video is a good current walkaround Central Pattaya that reflects things as they are, Nick owns a couple of bars and is one of the more positive people around usually. :D

The economy is fucked....
BUT i have faith, Thailand has been thru lots over the past 4 decades ( although not as bad as this). Numerous coups, attempted coups, sars, mers, tsunami, droughts, bombings, insurrections in the south, communists etc etc
and has pulled thru

Will Pattaya Survive? - Bars Getting Torn Down, Hotels, Bars, Beach even many 7-Eleven's Have Closed

I drove around phuket island the other day, the west coast (area where the tourist go) was eerie, 80% of places closed, few people out and about
BUT
from Chalong circle up Chao Fa road ( main road from the south to Phuket town ) was just like a low season, plenty of cars, bikes, shops open.

Island wise I've only ever been to Samui but that was on my first trip years ago, has Phuket got any significant industry other than tourism? It's all degrees of recession but I would bave thought Samui and Phuket are likely to be really hard hit.

I was going to say at least it's happening through the low season, but then when I checked the historic quarterly tourist arrivals its really not as significant difference as I'd imagined.

i'd say 90% + of the economy of Samui and 80% of Phuket, is tourism based, ( hotels, restaurants, shops, malls, activities (water and land) )
FYI:
they are opening our airport saturday, but so far only for domestic flights

Took a drive down the back route from Jomtien/Pratumnak to Bali Hai late afternoon today and walked along Walking Street. Very tranquil looking down on Pattaya and nice and relaxed as locals headed to exercise along Walking Street to Bali Hai.

Not street scenes but the pier area to Koh Larn is a huge aspect of Pattaya tourism normally. You can see the pier walkway which is normally rammed with island day trippers, Pattaya Beer Garden shuttered up slightly left of centre last building. Just a couple of guys sitting on a boat, everything else just moored up.

Pattaya was in a severe state of decline before COVID, I don't see much to be optimistic about. Besides the change in demographics away from the retired White male, our dick-tater is actively trying to destroy the nightlife. Nothing like having morality shoved up your ass by a coupmaker-dictator.

I don't see how Thailand will get rid of the military this time.

Unless you're part of the top 1% this government doesn't care about your welfare, Thai or Farang.
