O dear, Protests in Bangkok

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

what a bs response form the westerners.
A German expat in his 30s who now lives in the Phra Khanong area said he joined the rally because although he is a foreigner, he has lived here for 12 years and feels like a Thai citizen. "I feel compelled to stand up for what is right and that is the main reason I am here," the man, who asked not to be named, said.
Foreigners are in the locations, cause they mostly think its safe and want to be cool.
....was a grey-haired foreigner in a blue T-shirt and shorts. He wore sandals and carried a backpack. He looks like a tourist, but he said he is "observing" the pro-democracy protest
....but he joined the rally because it was close to his apartment.
I've been here nearly 35 years, have never deluded myself into thinking i am like a thai or thinking like one..

What's bs? The article or the expat's sentiments?

Thanks. Agreed, btw. 15 years in Japan and do not consider myself Japanese. I have opinions on Japanese politics, but generally keep them to myself.

I agree. While it's not exactly a secret where I stand, I wouldn't join a protest in Bangkok, no matter how long I've lived here. That should be a Thai protest, by and for Thais who want a different country.

I think it always pays to remember that unless you hold a passport of the country you are living in you are there at the discretion of the govt of that country, and should conduct yourself accordingly.

I have signed overseas work contracts in the past that have explicitly stated to refrain from getting involved in local country politics.

rather watch it on TV

The scuffling and camping overnight begins...

15 Activists Summoned by Police Turn Themselves In

A demonstrator splashed paint on police during a scuffle when 15 pro-democracy activist leaders reported themselves to the investigators Friday.

Tensions ran high between protesters and police Friday when Jatupat Boonpattararaksa or “Pai Dao Din” and 14 other pro-democracy activists went to Samranrat Police Station Friday in response to police summons.

“I did not do this as a threat. But since they continue to harass us, I want to harass them back in an artistic way,” protester Chaiamorn Kaewibul, who splashed blue paint on police in the commotion, said. One report said 13 police officers were doused with paint.

The demonstrators led by Jatupat also camped out overnight at the Oct. 14, 1973 Memorial in defiance of the government, the beginning of what they hope is a days-long protest.

In contrast to many of the recent student-led protests, many of the attendees were mostly Redshirt members. Relics of the protest against the Democrat Party-led government from a decade ago such as the “heart clappers” and “feet clappers” were sold at the rally.

This may be your last chance to get you and your loved ones out of Thailand.
