Coronavirus Lockdown Dims Thailand's Once-Thriving Sex Trade

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

I think he was being sarcastic.
I was being half-sarcastic. I agree that the sex trade and everything that comes with it is part of the culture, and it won’t go away. At the same time, I do think the government would like to sweep it under the rug, and the corona crisis has given them a very good opportunity to do so.

My prediction is that the Thai government will use this opportunity to stamp out the seedy nightlife that soils Thailand’s global image, and will see to it that these women are offered dignified jobs working in factories owned by Thai elite and their Chinese partners.

I dont think so. I"ve been told that many of the bars in BKK are owned by ex generals or ex policeman. And with all the brown envelopes police and army get from bar owners,, they wont give up on easy money.

Take away the sex trade , nice idea , how many times would you visit Thailand to look at the same floating market and temples, ohh and no reason to play golf there either.

of course, that's why people travel en masse across the world over and over again. Surely men who are too ugly to get any action back home just spend 70% of their money on long distance flights to slum it down KSR and eat 30B pad thai. That's something to look forward.

Migrant sex workers fear for the future
by Mark Kelly, June 30, 2020

“Bua” used to earn up to 40,000 baht a month as a sex worker in the northern province of Chiang Mai when the coronavirus forced entertainment venues to close, leaving her jobless.

Since March, the 32-year-old single mother, who is Burmese, has racked up debts of more than 15,000 baht to pay for her daughter’s education and rent.

Ms Bua survived on handouts from the sex worker group Empower Foundation, which ranged from rice to tampons, since government handouts required her to show a Thai identification card.

“If it wasn’t for Empower, I would have committed suicide,” said Ms Bua, who asked in a phone interview not to use her real name and requested anonymity so family members did not find out about her work.

While Thailand has announced plans for bars, pubs and karaoke venues to re-open from Wednesday this week after being closed for four months, sex workers fear there will be few clients as many are foreigners and the borders remain closed.

A 2014 UNAIDS report estimated there were 123,530 sex workers in Thailand but advocacy groups put the figure at more than twice that number, including tens of thousands of migrants from neighbouring Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Activists say migrant or stateless sex workers are among the hardest hit by the economic impact of the coronavirus.

Without tourists being allowed back in and the current stringent restrictions placed on staying open, there is no reason for a bar that has ladies available for take away, to open>

Bars on bangla in Patong are allowed to open tonight but they expect less than 30% to actually open and i think 50% of those would be lucky to sell a few beers/night

I tink I may have posted something like this recently, but why not be redundant.

Since the mid to late 70s Thailand has had "the reputation" for it's outrageous and wild nightlife catering to the adult men of the world. Govt could never have been able to achieve that status if they had tried, and fortunately they more or less let it happen albeit with some baht stuffed in brown envelopes. I've no clue the actual numbers the adult tourist trade brought in, but it has to be quite large.

My view is that the Thai govt should embrace that reputation and leverage it for even greater tourism. Promote it as safer than 'western red light districts', overall lower cost than other countries, far more fun than in restrictive countries. Adults can come to play like adults in Thailand - if got a wife and kids, then take them to Disneyland instead. Ignore the feminazis and do-gooders who what to control everyone and get on with it. Pattaya has the most bars per square mile anywhere on the planet and plenty of friendly girls to keep you company. Etc for slogans and TAT pitches.

Such a lost opportunity now that the current regime seems bent on killing the adult nightlife industry and the billions of baht that came from it.
