Better 'wipe' those hard drives!
Re: Better 'wipe' those hard drives!
Wont help as the searched material can be still on the smart phone/tablet, and factory reset will not eliminate it. You need one of the apps available to wipe your data, like Safewiper, this is one option to clean your phone/tablet, and has options for android and mac.
SafeWiper for Android is a powerful and compact data wiping software that allows users to destroy all data on Android phones and tablets completely. It's a disk drive sanitizing tool and partition eraser utility, DoD 5220.22 M compliant. Support erasing 20+ type of files like messages, contacts, photos, call history, notes, videos and more.
See why factory reset won't delete everything on Andriod." https://www.safewiper.com/tutorials/fac ... droid.html

Re: Better 'wipe' those hard drives!
Here's a hint you guys for serious security (Windows)
Encrypt your system drive with bitlocker but using a USB drive as a key. Save a backup of the key to the cloud.
Encrypt data drives using Truecrypt but full volume encryption. You have to do this before you copy any data on it, but all anyone can see is an unformatted partition with random data.
Wipe the USB drive you use as a key before your trip, in case they search you you can just say you lost the usb that was the key, what are they going to do ? Once you get to your destination
get the key back from the cloud and you're good to go.
Never use your smartphone for viewing porn or if you do wipe all caches and fill the phone storages to capacity to overwrite any remains.

May I ask why you recommend using Bitlocker for the system drive, instead of the open source Truecrypt or Veracrypt for both system and data drives?superferret wrote: ↑Thu Nov 30, 2017 8:23 pm Here's a hint you guys for serious security (Windows)

Re: Better 'wipe' those hard drives!
Well I know this is super paranoid but I like to do things right, the reason I use Bitlocker vs Truecrypt for the system drive is 1) it has the option to use a pendrive instead of a password, at least with Windows 7,
when you start the computer it specifically asks for the pendrive to be inserted. I don't know if Truecrypt has this. It's also very easy because if the pendrive is inserted the system automatically starts up, no need to do
anything.
The USB option gives you the plausible deniability of having lost the USB drive, whereas having a
password you could be forced to give it out and it would be contempt of the court if you don't as mentioned above.
The other reason is if I have a system drive encrypted with Truecrypt which they can immediate see from the Truecrypt boot loader, that would show I'm using Truecrypt which could be interpreted
as evidence that my data drives are also encrypted with that. Whereas if I use bitlocker, I could just say I never even heard of Truecrypt and the data drive I just purchased and never used before.

Re: Better 'wipe' those hard drives!
If you clear history the images are just marked as deleted in the file system. The data actually stays on your
drive until it's overwritten by other files. Any undelete or forensics program can find it in a second and recover it (until it's actually overwritten)
This is why you also have to use a program to "wipe free space". Then it really gets deleted.
The problem is AFAIK the "wipe free space" does not work with SSDs. The reason is that the SSD moves the data around internally based on it's internal controller.
I don't know if there is a solution to the problem, so I just encrypt my SSDs. If you have HDDs the wipe free space will permanently get rid of the data. CCleaner can do this.
Here's an explanation of why it does not work with SSDs if you are interested:

They sure do, but unless you're a real criminal it's unlikely your drives would ever get to that level.Username Taken wrote: ↑Thu Nov 30, 2017 10:38 pm Wow. And you guys think that the forensic cops don't know about any of this stuff.

they can keep it and Maybe u will get it back
So if ur only encrypting it to hide something going thru airports you can be fucked.
the way i suggested putting in the cloud is the safest and most easily used, PLUS you don't need Your computer to access the info anywhere
There is zero way they would even know u have something up there, so no reason for anyone to look for it and "where would they start"
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Also a hacker could load files on a device or assume control of a device to download files, too. It's an old trick. Ten years ago I had a friend in a group that could do it if they didn't like someone. I thought it was f-ed up but he just said "these are bad people anyway." They had a fondness vacationing in Thailand, too.
