Australian woman's GoFundMe alleges amputation and mistreatment in Phuket hospital

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Australian woman's GoFundMe alleges amputation and mistreatment in Phuket hospital

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

3 November 2017
- Doctors at Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket have dismissed reports that they may have to amputate Australian tourist Stacey Liddle’s left leg, which was crushed by a bus after a collision near the island’s Chalong Circle last Thursday.
Image
Liddle, from Brisbane, traveled to Thailand to celebrate her 30th birthday. On Oct. 26, her rental motorbike collided with a tour bus. Liddle was knocked down on to the road and the bus’ back wheels ran over her left leg.

Fundraising
Following the accident, an appeal for donations to help pay for Liddle’s medical bills was launched on GoFundMe.com as her travel insurance company had refused to cover medical expenses. It was reported that Liddle’s policy did not cover injury through accidents while riding a motorbike, and Liddle was not licensed to ride a motorbike in Thailand.

There has been some confusion over how much funds were being sought to have Liddle flown home “so they don’t amputate her leg.”
[CEO Note: Thai doctors at the hospital said they have no intention of amputating her leg. This could be a misunderstanding, or a lost in translation problem, but the same GFM appeal alleges that Liddle was also physically mistreated by hospital staff.]

News.com.au initially reported the amount sought as AUD$15,000 (THB381,000, while the GoFundMe post itself continues to ask for AUD$30,000 while the “goal” set for the campaign remains at $35,000 (THB890,000). Donations by 77 people saw AUD$3,466 (THB88,132) raised in the campaign’s first three days.
However, after intensive media coverage of Liddle’s plight, donations surged to AUD$23,045 (THB585,355) as of this morning (3 November.)

She seems angry that the Australian government is paying for Cocaine Cassie's legal bills, but not her repatriation.

I only need 10 grand more to get me home and the gov doesn't want to know about it. This convicted and guilty drug smuggler gets her legal bill picked up from the tax payers. I'm not one to whinge poor me but what I did to myself wasn't illegal and 10 grand compared to over 100 grand... I'm disgusted in our Gov. I sure Iknow where the public would prefer there tax paying money to go.

According to that image she was "ran [sic] over by a bus on a scooter". I've seen people transporting some ungainly loads on motos but never a bus. That must have been quite a sight.

On her Facebook page she says she is doing a double degree at QUT. That's one of the best universities in Australia.
