Zen Mate - Free VPN W/Chrome

Post by wackyjacky »

I didn't feel like paying Hidemyass again if I didn't have to and I found Zen Mate yesterday which comes free with Chrome. I can't tell how much slower it is than HMA yet, as my speeds are dreadful 1/2 the day. Being Google, I'm sure it has a direct pipeline to the NSA, but it works well for Netflix, streaming sports, & protection at public networks. It has about 1/20 as many locations as HMA (NYC, Frankfurt, Zurich, Kowloon, & London). Those more tech savvy will know better whether it sucks or not, but it's worth a look because the price is right.

I use it for iPlayer (UK) and comedycental (usa).

Just a bit laggy at the start but good speeds.

Just pay for a proper VPN. Torrent freak has an annual list of the best VPNs. Also, hidemyass keeps logs and will happily hand your browsing history to any Western government.

Well, the discussions on which VPN is the best, which one is logging traffic, which one is handing over data, which countries to avoid is never ending. Fact is, you never know.......it's a question of trust and we trust too easily. Also, if you have to pay for a VPN -and you do that with your credit card- your anonymity is blown anyway.

For the real tinfoil hat wearer, use tor through a vpn that was paid for with bitcoin whilst using public Wi-Fi using a laptop running tails.

Nice life

Indeed, so you don't pay with a credit card. Any decent VPN will offer alternative payment methods. Private Internet Access, for example, allows you to pay with bitcoin (can be anonymous, depending on how you get your coin) or gift card (is anonymous if you buy said gift card with cash).

It is true that you shouldn't rely on VPNs for privacy, but that doesn't mean that those companies who will relunctantly hand over your data are the same as those who are basically a pipeline to the NSA.
