Windows update not updating
Windows update not updating
Hey Techies!
I have a little red windows update notice and when I checked for updates I got a notice saying "I am missing important security updates)

I looked online and Windows is doing 24H2 updates for 23H1 and 23H2. When I checked my system I am still running on 21H2
I am fairly sure my system can cope with the '22 and '23 versions but here is a brief summary:

Anyone got any suggestions as to why the older updates didn't automatically update? I have had lots of other updates right up until last month.

Re: Windows update not updating
If your Windows system is still running on version 21H2 despite receiving regular updates, there could be several reasons why feature updates (like 22H2 or 23H1) haven't been automatically installed. Here's a checklist of potential causes and solutions:
- Delayed Feature Updates Settings
Windows Update Policy: Some systems have feature updates deferred. This could be configured manually or by an organization.
What to Do:
Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
Click Advanced options and check the "Choose when updates are installed" section. If there's a delay set for feature updates (e.g., 365 days), remove or reduce it. - Unsupported Hardware or Drivers
Explanation: Certain older drivers or hardware components may not be fully compatible with newer Windows versions, so Microsoft could block the update for your system.
What to Do:
Check the Windows Update Troubleshooter:
Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
Run the "Windows Update" troubleshooter.
Update all drivers:
Open Device Manager and ensure all drivers are up-to-date.
Check your PC manufacturer's website for any updated drivers. - Insufficient Disk Space
Explanation: Feature updates require extra disk space to download and install, and low disk space could prevent updates.
What to Do:
Free up space by using Storage Sense (Settings > System > Storage) or manually delete unnecessary files. - Corrupted Update Cache
Explanation: If the Windows Update cache is corrupted, it can block feature updates.
What to Do:
Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:Then retry Windows Update.Code: Select all
net stop wuauserv net stop bits ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old net start wuauserv net start bits
- Blocked Updates by Software or Antivirus
Explanation: Some third-party antivirus programs or software may interfere with the update process.
What to Do:
Temporarily disable any antivirus or security software and check for updates. - Use the Windows Update Assistant
What to Do:
Go to the Microsoft Download Windows 10/11 page.
Download the Update Assistant.
Run it to manually upgrade to the latest supported version for your system. - Check the Microsoft Block List
Explanation: Microsoft sometimes blocks updates for systems with known issues.
What to Do:
Check the Windows Release Health Dashboard.
Look for any issues affecting your version and hardware.

Had this on my last machine too, an Acer. Only fix was a new machine. Apparently there's some part of the hardware blocking the installation everytime, followed by a reboot of the former version.
Re: Windows update not updating
Windoze is nothing but malware. Linux Mint 21.1 fixes that, permanently. Running 21.3 now, the latest, but 21.1 runs smoother. Hope that helps.Doc67 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2024 10:43 am Hey Techies!

Re: Windows update not updating
How did you discover this?
I have gone through: Windows/System/Troubleshoot/Other Troubleshoot/Windows Update. Apparently, this is specific to this issue. It detected the problem and claims to have fixed it:

I clicked on the "Detection Details" and it came up with this lot:

I tried to update again but the security issues are still there and there is no new OS system being offered. Maybe it will at some time in the next few days.
Re: Windows update not updating
Nope, no updates come available until January 2025. I know this because the last update for WIN11 had a (large) bug affecting the search index, crippling the search function, and I had to roll back to February (edit: April) 2024 to fix it. I switched off auto-updates for six weeks to prevent it from happening again.

Re: Windows update not updating
The machine affected crashed repeatedly during installation of a certain update, and rolled back to the last stable version, can't remember which. In the windows update history I found some mentions for failed installations.
Since updates build on former updates and require a certain version to function, a failed installation of an update makes future updates impossible in cases.
Re: Windows update not updating
The version you currently use (21H2) is no longer serviced (since 11-2023) by Microsoft and you might be at risk. You must have a long list of failed updates recorded somewhere in that machine.
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windo ... nformation
You might want to consider a new machine if updates keep failing (and why wouldn't they?). The CPU you currently use is a very power hungry beast. A newer (2023) i5 CPU will give you much more power while using only 15W (yours: 45W), and a newer i7 even more.

The comparison in link above is between your CPU and the (late) 2023 version of the i5. Newer versions offer even more.
