If big brother decides that you're interesting enough that they want to know more about you, then not using the internet isn't going to slow them down.

Um... this is absolutely not true.

The second you connect it to your computer to access it, any number of embedded malware applications could scan and transmit it. The kind of applications that can be pushed through a cheap consumer router with known faults without you having "clicked" on something/etc.

It wouldn't be "on demand" access, but you're inevitably going to plug the drive in and it can easily be set to watch for when you do and kick off. likely sending it out to some cloud service before the culprit downloads it.

I'm sure those anti malware apps are flawless. The irony in your statement is golden.

Even with the detectable ones most of those apps look for known signatures. Of course, signatures aren't known until after systems have been infected and the problem has been identified. And that's assuming it's a widespread malware and not a homegrown one being used by someone local pushing over public hotspots and cracked neighborhood routers.

But... false senses of security are cool too.

The answer is ... we don't know what they can do.

So I'm in a bar ... talk to a guy ... says he's a security IT guy. Keeps all Banking/private info on a separate Laptop not connected to Web. If and when he needs to do a transaction online, then and only then, plugs in, does it, then unplugs it. Why do you think he is paranoid?

I've been hacked before, and I don't know how, but I bought a new hard drive and started over.

Ramped up my walls, inconvenienced myself with extra steps, and still don't feel safe. But I hope to nip it in the bud if my computer acts strange. Fate.

Honestly Richard, I wouldn't rely on anti malware software and so on. These programs generally lull people into a false sense of security. Good professional malware, new malware and legal applications that still spy on you are generally not detected by antivirus programs. Of course you should have such systems on your machine but do not completely rely on them.
Call me paranoid, but if I have just the slightest assumption that something is wrong with my machine or if my antivirus detects something then I do not trust the system anymore and I reinstall the operating system. Well, that takes perhaps 3 or 4 hours, but then I'm sure that everything is alright.

So die Tränen sieht man nicht

In der Tiefe ist es einsam
Und so manche Träne fliesst
Und so kommt es dass das Wasser
In den Meeren salzig ist

Given Francis' admissions of using some snake oil software called deep freeze I probably wouldn't take network security advice from him.

to a major degree you were.

best bet is to stick with companies for anything serious (like banks) that use the sms/rsa passcode system. much harder to crack.

good banks also tie in visa purchases with this system... and can be told to decline sites that don't support it.

of course that doesn't stop the waiter from using a skimmer, an atm stealth skimmer, etc. most important aspect of all of it is to go with a bank that protects YOU when shit actually goes down. the rest of your data no one really wants unless you're running for office or something. security by obscurity... be insignificant enough that you're not worth the effort.
