What makes a Kick Ass games centre?
What makes a Kick Ass games centre?
Ok I will preface this by saying that to me computers are for work, downloading and surfing the internet.
The last computer game I played was Quake. The last playstation type game I played was Super Mario on a Nintendo. This was in the mid 1990's and with ex wife No1. My state of the art computer back then had a whopping 32MB of Ram and a top notch 28k modem.
I believe that things have progressed on the game front from what I hear, but alas I know sweet FA about them.
So say you were designing an entertainment centre for the kids of today what would you use and how would it be set up? The sort of entertainment centre that would make the kids love the place and leave their parents in peace.
I am thinking a large screen or multi network screens so they could play networked (off the one server or game station) or online games (assume a 4MB internet connection with 99.6% uptime service guarantee in Cambodia).
What would you have to keep 12-18 year olds amused? Think kids on holiday at a hotel that are bored with the beach, quite a few kids from different families and countries. I believe that no matter the language barrier games like these could enable them to play together and have fun.
Would it be computer games a Playstation or a whatever? What size screens or TV's would you need? Preferably as cost effective as possible (under say $3-5k)
Your help will be appreciated and possibly rewarded.

Wow. Always interesting to be reminded of how things were a mere 20 years ago.LaudJohn wrote:

Yes, things have taken a few steps forward since then.
Personally, I'd go straight for the PlayStation 3. Just plug it in and play.
Also, you can connect up to 7 controllers at one time, so perfect for a group of kids.
Also, it will play the copied blue-ray discs here with no problems.
I hear mixed reports of how good playing online from Cambodia is.

Personally I'm a fan of Nintendo Wii and have found that kids from 6 to 106 will play on it endlessly - if you're playing too. The very best family centric console out there. But something to amuse them indefinitely so they'll leave you alone? Won't happen (the spoiled little shits).

Re: What makes a Kick Ass games centre?
Thanks guys, fast replies.
So far a couple of Wii's and PS 3's. Each of which can connect to a 50 or 60 inch LCD LED TV I assume?
Can they connect to a projector and a 103 inch screen? Will it have a fast enough refresh rate?

Yes for the Wii, although you'd need to spring for the optional high definition video cable and check that whatever you're connecting to has a five-cable input.

They look great on a big projection screen!
And it comes with basic AV cables, but definitely worth buying the HDMI (high definition) cables for about $10 here.

Note that high definition on the Wii is NOT the same as a HDMI cable.

Re: What makes a Kick Ass games centre?
What about a computer server networked to individual computers in rooms throughout a complex so 20 kids could play the same or different games in their rooms instead of sleeping?
