The world's oldest Ipad

Post by Doc67 »

I still have a working iPad version 9.3.5 (13G36) with a gargantuan capacity of 12.9GB.

I used to take it away with me and watch Netflix using a special mirroring adapter and an HDMI lead (feel free to laugh). Now I used a Laptop when travelling and the iPad has been asleep for about 2 years.

I just fired it up and Netflix says my OS is out of date and they don't support anything less than 14. However, when I tap on the software update of the OS, the iPad says I am all up to date.

I am trying to learn how to pack light to avoid baggage charges and my laptop and power pack weighs about 3kg alone, so I thought the iPad might be worth using again. I want to use it also for Internet access while I am away and hate using my phone for browsing (Samsung G8).

A few questions:
1) is this iPad no longer supported by Apple and it is effectively useless?
2) Should I just use the hotel's Netflix app and sign into my account that way? (That's assuming they have smart TV's)
3) Should I invest in a new 'tablet', and if so, which one?

As always, many thanks in advance...

If you only wanting to watch Netflix in the hotel, then download Netflix on your smartphone. If the hotel has a smart TV, then when you open Netflix, you can pair the phone with the TV via a QR code to allow you to watch on the TV. That way, you can do away with laptop and ipad.
Sorry - it doesn't answer the question of your IPAD from the Jurassic era!

I just checked what it is: It's an iPad Gen 0 ! The first of them, 2010 with the smallest memory available, 16GB, so it says on the back. I ought to be embarrassed...

You’ve done well. I’m surprised that the battery is still viable.

I was running an older iPad Air2 with an earlier OS for 5 years, because I had some data in an app that would be lost if the OS was updated (rendering the app useless) to the newer 64bit version.

The computing hardware is just one limitation.
The latest version of IOS for your iPad is only what it can support, technically. It’s not even in double digits.
Then, the app software and developers only support these older versions of their own app for so long.

Progress.
Eventually, horses become a thing for hobby riding. Cars run on liquid fuel, not coal. Cars without catalytic converters are the nightmare of environmentalists, and you’re expected to believe that EV cars are zero emissions.

Be proud that you’ve done your thing for the environment by running this iPad for so long.

If you were still in the UK, and if you are not perversely averse to using Apple (some folks go full Greta Thunberg at the mention of Apple, for some inexplicable reason), I’d have suggested getting a 12.9” iPad, and not bother with the computer. The majority of the stuff that I used to do with a laptop is comfortably done with my iPad, now. Although there are times that the laptop is better.
I generally buy a recent model, but from the certified refurbished stuff.

However! I did buy an iPad in Cambodia 2 years ago. It cost the same as the uk model, but came with Apple care. So, in iPad terms, reasonable value.

Generally, I don’t travel with the computer anymore.

Why not? Except the tedium of entering passcodes and ensuring no one else benefits. I rarely do this.

If the iPad is still working, it will have limited use. The OS will no longer be supported. Most apps will have become obsolete on that OS, too. But it may be recyclable, and useable for credit (in countries where that’s the case). You are quite probably going to be limited to browsing. And even then, the age of the browser app may be limiting.

Well they are a shitty company with shitty products and shitty business practices

They have a dishonest corporate policy, don't pay tax, use child labour, flat out lie abou warranty cover for their products as policy, lax personal data security, coolaboratin with US govt spy programme (P.R.I.S.M), anticompetititive business practices, planned obsolescence, closed product ecosystems (itunes). . .

Apple have been on the slide since before Steve Jobs tried to cure fucking stage 3 pancreatic cancer by visiting spiritualists and drinking green tea

That said, I liked my work issue Ipad, but I'd never pay for an Apple product

Inferior products, premium pricing

Yes, all good technical reasons to avoid Apple/iPads, and choose another brand/model, granted.

I remember an instrument Tech in a Petrochemical plant telling me one day, we were there to carry out maintenance on the radio system, he had filled his 80MB hard drive on his 286 computer...we were astounded how you could fill so much space! bugger all to do with ipads... I have a hp pavillion windows laptop..only weighs about 1.5kg...but probably my last laptop...I needed this power for video editing but have since sold my camera gear so when this dies I guess its a windows or Android tablet for me...

I'm thinking the same thing. I have a new (second-hand, but new to me) HP ZBook which is a bit clunky but does its job. I only bought it last year so it needs to put in at least a further 2 years of service. But after that, a super lightweight tablet will be the way to go.
