SMART - Mobile Data Mystery

Post by Doc67 »

I have a smart sim. For a long time I paid the $3 for 2GB a month for mobile data without any problems. I never used more than 500mb and usually less than 300mb. I have WIFI everywhere I go and don't need mobile data beyond minimal amounts for Grab, ABA bank or Google maps.

I changed my plan to $1 for 500mb (Hey, that $2 is nearly 3 beers in you-know-where).

Since I downgraded it keeps cutting out within a couple of weeks, claiming it has been used up. I check my mobile date usage on my phone and this says I have used:

Jun 1-30 248mb
July 1-31 109mb
Aug 1-9 33mb

However, according to Smart, I have used up two lots of 500mb. Plus they helped themselves to another $3 for 2GB by Mid June.
July 28th another 500mb was added. By August 3 they claim it was all used.

They basically depleted the balance until it got to $0.10

Is this additional data use possible? Does my phone have a leak?

Or do they think, because I am such a Cheap Charlie that I might be a local and won't notice getting ripped off?

I just cancelled all subscriptions and then added $1 to my balance. Then subscribed again for the $1 / 500mb package from today. I even put a Mobile Data usage alarm on at 350mb. Let's see if this carries on.

I know it's a piddly amount of money, but it is irritating and if this is a little scam, it must be a big one.

Any ideas or similar experiences?

Can you download the SmartNas app from SMART on your mobile and try comparing the usage from that app to your phones settings?
I guess you have checked for apps running in the background on your phone that might be consuming data & possibly not showing on your usage settings? some apps are quite data hungry & are best turned off if not needed.

I have had similar issues with data seemingly disappear quite quickly with Cambodian sim cards in the past, So I wouldn't be surprised if the problem
lays with the carrier.

Got the app, entered the number, it asks for the confirmation code but it hasn't sent it. Do I have to put more money onto the account to receive a code?

Do you turn off location sharing when you finish using grab etc?

If not that's the missing data

No.

As soon as grab boots up it knows where I am. So too Google maps, that's how I know where I have been the previous night!

Yeah, location sharing is data intensive and probably is at least a chunk of your missing data packages. Also it depletes battery significantly faster when location services is selected

The only location apps are Grab and Google, and their data usage in the last month is 13mb and 2mb respectively. How can this be using nearly 2gb in the last 2 months?

Besides, I want to use Grab without faffing around with turning things off and on.

Could be a multitude of things then, Google drive, auto sync, app updates, apps running in background without user bothering to close after use

Smart aren't robbing your credit anyhow, that's for sure

Also could be photos being backed to the cloud, but I don't think Doc is savvy enough to have that set up (no offence).

A possible candidate for unwanted data gobbling is photos being saved to cloud servers like OneDrive etc.
The size of data being eaten is not just a few location sharing apps running in the background.
