Opennet

Post by Jacobincambodia »

Hey all - I subscribed to Opennet this week and I'm getting "plugged in" tomorrow. I'm pretty excited. I subscribed to their $99/month package which will get me 8mb up/down during the day and 12mb at night.

I am a long time Ezecom customer and an IT guy so I felt very reluctant for a long time but the price is just too steep. I was getting a "special" deal too. I was paying $160/month for 4mb up/down, double at night. It was consistent, reliable and stable. I sure hope I made the right decision. I'll report back with a review!

That's obviously their fiber optic, right?

It would want to be... their 8Mbps ADSL2+ connection is a fraction of that. I've commented previously that we get more than twice our paid plan speed for $13 - during the day. It ramps up further at night.

Personality, Jacob, you'd probably be fine with their faster plan for around $20.

Well there is no adsl standard that would give 8mb/s up.

ADSL2+ has a max theoretical speed of 24Mbit/ps (not Mbps, so if that's your point, yes, you're obviously quite correct).

Stroppy. No!
Re-read my post. I'm referring to upload bandwidth.
The best upload you'll get with adsl2+ is a (theoretical) 3mb/s by using annex m (very few providers even use this).

My mistake, you did say 'up'.

Oh yeah, that's fiber optic. Wouldn't do anything different! Too much interference for wireless and DSL sucks.

Well, the good news is that I'm up and running on Saturday as promised by Opennet. I would say the technicians lacked some of the professionalism that Ezecom has, but that's not too important. They also used a thinner fiber wire, which I'm not sure matters or not and their equipment is obviously cheaper than Ezecom equipment. All that to say, I don't really care as long as I'm getting my promised speed! I'm happy to say I'm getting faster than subscribed speeds. Speed tests via Hongkong said I was getting 25mb down and 18mb up. That's incredible! It's possible since I'm a new subscriber, they haven't locked down (throttled) my bandwidth yet, so we could be experiencing a little house warming gift or something. Tonight, I downloaded a 1.8gb torrent in about 25 minutes which is crazy fast.

I'll let you guys know if something changes. I'm on the $99/month fiber plan, 8mb down/up during the week days, and 12mb at night and on the weekends, public holidays. Also, have screaming fast Youtube.
