Australian cops are not interested in whether your phone is unlocked, it is not illegal to unlock your phone. You can buy unlocked phones in Oz.

Yes, I should have said this - if you bought your phone without signing up for a plan it's probably unlocked.

We used Amaysim until Telstra pushed them out of the unlimited data market, and then went back to Virgin Mobile.

I think things have changed a bit - my young fella uses Amaysim - $45 for unlimited incl 5gb for data. The cheapest that telstra do is $55 for 500mb. Virgin have a 1gb data cap.

You might need to read that again wasabi.

Nah - didn't :D

Telstra don't have unlimited data for phones - you can get up to about 3gb, but that is all nowadays! (But really, does one need that much anyway for a smartphone? I'm on mine all the time and probably only use 2gb max).

We paid Amaysim $300 annually for unlimited phone/data but Telstra (as the wholesaler) aggressively went after the indies who were offering unlimited data and refused to renew their wholesale agreements. Amaysim paid us a pro rata refund and also publicly disclosed the nasty that Telstra was up to. Telstra is lucky it's a government subsidiary, a private provider would be done for anti-trust, many times over. Filthy company.

Yep, totally agree! That's why I moved to TPG - by far the cheapest for home broadband/phone/mobile bundles - and never had issues with connectivity, speed nor coverage!

I'm flying into Gold Coast, OZ and renting a car. All I want a phone for is emergency calls if I break down. I will be in the area of Byron Bay (Byron Bay Blues festival) so should have reception. When I travel to Singapore I buy a couple day card for my small batt. operated wifi device and have computer. I buy the card at the Singapore airport at currency exchange counters. Am I going to be able to do this at the Gold Coast Airport and at the same time get a card for my phone.

BTW/ I have no contract as the phone is over two years old. I will take it down to the market and get it unlocked.

Anyone been to Byron Bay/Ballina? Any advice. Good bars/restaurants?

If there never was a contract with a specific service provider, why would his phone be locked? I'm guessing it isn't locked at all.
