Lenovo Factory Installs Malicious Adware On Laptops
One of the worst tech f*ck-ups ever. "By installing a single self-signed root certificate (trust me: That’s really bad) across all of Lenovo’s affected machines, Superfish intentionally pokes a gigantic hole into your browser security and allows anyone on your Wi-Fi network to hijack your browser silently and collect your bank credentials, passwords, and anything else you might conceivably type there. As Errata Security’s Robert Graham put it, “I can intercept the encrypted communications of SuperFish’s victims (people with Lenovo laptops) while hanging out near them at a cafe wifi hotspot.” If you have a Lenovo laptop that has Superfish on it (try Filippo Valsorda’s Superfish test to see), I would advise nothing short of wiping the entire machine and installing vanilla Windows—not Lenovo’s Windows. Then change all of your passwords." LINK: http://www.slate.com/articles/technolog ... screw.html

Yeah that's quite a cock-up.

This will only be meaningful to other old techs.
I once spent a week trying to resolve a network problem in a new lab (long before the availability of solve-it-for-me apps) running on BNC/co-ax. Turned out the batch of Novell NE2000 NICs had identical MACs, problem in manufacturing. Even got the vendors involved and it still took them a couple of days to work it out.

NSA has embedded software in all hard drives made by Samsung, Toshiba, seagate and others.
discovered by Russian researchers.

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST
