internett security

Post by phuketrichard »

Just saw a very interesting show on Alljezera on security

they say Tor an pgp encryption for emails are the basic things one should use especially if ur a journalist an wish to protect where ur looking and ur sources.

Securedrop is being set up by many newspapers to add a level of protectin to people whose identity should be protected from NSA's prying eyes https://freedom.press/securedrop

Note they all tell

Go to a place with a public internet connection, one that you don't normally frequent
Download and install the Tor browser

Here's the Washington Post secure drop,

than also "Why disable Javascript?
Javascript is a widely used programming language for creating interactive web pages. In recent years, it has become nearly ubiquitous and most browsers enable it by default as a result.

Unfortunately, Javascript is also a common source of security vulnerabilities in browsers. A Javascript exploit was used by the FBI-deployed August 2013 Tor Freedom Hosting malware to de-anonymize Tor users. Javascript exploits are also mentioned in documents describing the NSA's "Egotistical Giraffe" program, which also has the goal of targeting and de-anonymizing tor users.

given these trends, we encourage securedrop users to disable javascript to protect themselves from malware that would use it to attack their browser and potentially de-anonymize them. javascript is not the only potential source of such exploits, but given its use in recent attacks, we believe it is prudent to disable it at this time.

Although i no longer report on sensitive issues i do photograph ( what many of u consider porn) and wait for the day when my photos can also be encrypted.
I am sure 99% of my emails, what sites i visit and posts on forums is garbage but what about the other 1%?

an informed Public is necessary nowadays!!!

and then there's stuff like this periodically... meaning even TOR isn't really safe:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/07/30 ... ng_attack/

essentially it just comes down to: don't do anything with the web/computers that you don't want them to see... because odds are, they can. now, that doesn't mean they "will"... the best security is obscurity. not making yourself a high profile target. obviously for reporters this doesn't work out that well, but for the average joe it's generally how things play out.

by the end of 2014 it's estimated to be over 3 billion users online... the majority via multiple devices. the proverbial haystack there, and if you don't stand out they won't likely notice that you're a needle. that's the other danger of TOR (or any other privatizing system like that)... it puts you in a much smaller and much more closely inspected haystack so you stand out more clearly and are more likely to be noticed.

Of course, we were never really that safe to start with. McCarthy had his wiretaps, my grandparents had the "party line" phone so any neighbor could just pick up and listen in, and so on. Real privacy is a myth.

8-)

Somehow clear........if it wouldn't be agency malware then certain agencies would declare it as a tool for terrorists and they would close 'em down and arrest everybody involved. America and Europe is not that free anymore.
Und der Haifisch der hat Tränen
Und die laufen vom Gesicht
Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser
So die Tränen sieht man nicht

In der Tiefe ist es einsam
Und so manche Träne fliesst
Und so kommt es dass das Wasser
In den Meeren salzig ist
