You can't just blindly accept laws that are wrong! The laws in question, benefit a limited few, while supporting their overcharging of the masses. There's no way you adhere to every law!
look, among other things i produce and sell digital products.

consumers can look at the price and being shocked thinking it's totally overpriced but the net profits are never more than 30% apart rare cases, and for some of the mainstream shit they're 10-15% at best.

nowadays it's a buyers' market and never before they had such a vast offer of product for a pittance, this is true for audio, video, photography, ebooks, and much more and it's the reason many professionals quit for greener pastures as the earnings can't justify the production costs anymore.

at least 50% of the final price goes in advertising, consumer don't give a shit about this but without advertising or agency fees or whatever other middlemen involved there would be ZERO sales for their products, no matter if your product has been made in a few hours or if took a whole team on expensive locations and expensive rented gear.

and yet they complain 1$ for a song or to rent a movie is too much and therefore piracy is "moral" and "fair".
no, it's not and never will, not to mention it's not you deciding what's the fair price, either you can afford it or fuck off.

the copyright and IP laws are there to protect the investment and the interests of whoever produce and sell digital products, simple as that.
if piracy was legal everybody would stop production immediately as they would be instantly out of business.

this doesn't mean the entire industry would be killed, there are still ways to monetize digital products, but they just don't pay enough and therefore people would just do it as a side hobby, at best.

in any case even this scenario is not your business, as a buyer your only option is buying the product or not, period.

As someone who played in, and managed bands, I think pirating is a great thing from the consumers point of view. The internet has affected many peoples incomes, so it's just tough shit that it effects media companies. imho, it will weed out crap boy bands etc, and leave true musicians who do it for the love of music. There is no need whatsoever for bands to make millions, and record companies to make even more. It's becoming outdated. It's a new age. Compete or die. I would gladly buy a track straight from an artist at a reasonable price, via the internet. Fuck the corporate structures. They are becoming obsolete, as you can record on a laptop, and release on the internet. Times change. Adapt or die.

i've friends back home who run small recording studios and manage bands and talent scouting.
their revenue now comes from the merchandising and the gigs, no more from selling CDs, even if recently there's some little demand for vinyl limited editions.

however, it's tough.
lots of work, and not much money unless your shitty garage band becomes mainstream.

at the end of the year their net profit is maybe 30%.
not bad, but neither anything remotely on par with what the consumer think when they see a CD sold for 20-30 bucks.

the bands will probably get from 0.5$ to 2$ per CD and they've to split it between 4-5 members !

if we talk about money, DJs are doing good now but it won't last long.
and if the top DJs are now millionaires all the others are just making a living.

in any case it's a damn lot easier to DJ than playing in a band and learning to play a real instrument, not to mention that if the actual trend on electronic music keeps going on there will be less and less demand for live bands in general.

so, quality going definitely down and prices going down.
the consumers asked for it, now enjoy the freak show !

artists selling direct ? potentially it's all good and well, but without a fat investment in advertising they're going nowhere.

of course if you're already famous you can give it a try, Radiohead are exploring this path for instance but still with mixed results.
if even a world famous band like Radiohead aren't getting rich selling in-house, who will ?

there's such a shitload of stuff on sale nowadays, it will become soon impossible to stand out EVEN investing millions in advertising probably, especially for the most competitive markets like smartphone apps.

Amazon, Google, Apple, are a de facto monopoly for their industry and yet the pirates blame hollywood, this is total bollocks.

compete or die ? this will just kill all the indie labels and indie studios, as they're the ones who can't compete with big boys.

free software and open source also killed a lot of small developers and these jobs will never come back, as if outsourcing wasn't bad enough.

again, this is great for the crowd of cheap-ass consumers but terribly bad for whoever is thinking to invest time and money in a new product.
it's so bad i'm sure i could make more money selling t-shirts on the beach than making a new android app or writing an ebook sold on amazon.
