If you are an expat and haven't tried this service, it's great. Was really funny when they reached out to us, considering how many times we'd already promoted them here and elsewhere for an easy way to get netflix/hulu/etc.

Hola is good for a free service but it has nothing on paid alternatives.

As it's free if be interested to know who their main customer is for users browsing data. They need to make money somewhere. Who has analysed their privacy policy?

I'd be interested to know which alternatives you think are better? Most VPN services have their own servers all around the world, and you will have to manually connect to a particular server in order to access content specific to a country. What makes Hola different is that it makes use of Peer 2 Peer (P2P) technology to connect and serve the content. This means that the connection improves as the number of users increases, which is often the opposite with traditional (Paid) VPN services. Also, with a P2P technology, it can easily switch to any country without you having to make changes to the server configuration.

The reason Hola is free is because it's serverless (P2P) mentioned above, whereas other VPN's require servers. We also provide B2B services which allows us to offer this service for free.

In regards to data -

1. We don't collect any personal information and all data is completely anonymous, we also do not store any information longer than 2 weeks and therefore have no historical data.

2. We store popularity of websites and "likes" and "dislikes". This data is aggregated: we don't track users, we only track popularity of websites per country. This one stored forever, but this is a just a number "123456 users from Spain liked Hulu"

3. We store website activity data, anonymous -- we don't track users, we only track site visits. This one is stored with no expiration date, but it is transient, and start deleting it after a week or so of collection.

4. We also store crash/error reports for two weeks, for the sole purpose of debugging. This one includes some client-side information, such as exact browser version and OS. This information goes away after two weeks.
