GoPro or GoPro Alternative

Post by Brody »

I'm looking to get a GoPro or something like.

Anyone have any shops that they'd recommend dealing with and/or GoPro alternatives you'd suggest?

I bought the GoPro 8 earlier in the year and felt I'd made the right choice after looking at the Sony equivalent. Apart from that, every person I know from a diver, to mountain bike riders, a paraglider chap and one guy who is boating enthusiast all use GoPros. There are quite a few cheaper alternatives like some mentioned here https://toomanyadapters.com/best-gopro-alternatives/, but it seems to me GoPros are the market leader for most uses of small portable, easy to use waterproof cams. The people have spoken.

It would depend on what you want to use it for though, I guess.

I use a hero session. Mainly because space in my flight bag is at a premium. It’s not bad, but rather limited. I’ve made some decent, but boring videos on some of our flights. It’s not so good at night.
I’m very impressed with the night quality of the slightly larger regular ones, which some of the FOs have been using, so I will be upgrading soon.

That said, I’ve not personally tried out any of the alternatives. I’ve looked at a few, and been put off.

I use the Eken H9R (now it's like $50. I got mine for $30. 3-4 years ago) was like 1/7 the price of the GoPro 8 ($350. on amazon).
The Eken came with a bunch of accessories and all others gopro accessories are interchangeable.
I can't see why anyone would pay for the name brand GoPro

Here is a video link of the Eken H9 compared to the GoPro 6 (didn't see one for the gopro8 )

Very true. I just want to use it to make some short trip videos when I moto around town and with the kids. Mainly for my folks back home so they can see what big city life is like in Phnom Penh, lol.

Brother, I'd love to see those. If you can do it without giving away your identity, post them in the aviation thread. :thumb:

Where will it be in use, car or moto or up in the sky? You saw what I was using on the moto trip. I visited my Khmer friend who has a phone shop, was lucky and mentioned about the poor guy and his lady being knocked off while some youngsters tried to rob the ladys gold chain. He had one that he didn't use, so that's what I bought. There about $65 but receipt faded.

I think it does the job, and not too many worries if it got damaged.

Car / moto, just for short trip videos. So I don't need anything too snazzy.

What is the brand name of yours? HD DV?

My kid got one of them recently, it was $55 at G&L Camera Shop on 384. It seems to work fine, I'm not sure how good the stabilizing software is compared to a GoPro. He uses it to make BMX videos and they can be a bit bumpy mounted on the bike, maybe better on a chest/ helmet mount.
