Facebook in Asia
Re: Facebook in Asia
Telegram is not run by Russia. In fact, it was blocked in Russia for many years. There are zero developers and no servers located in Russia. The U.S. government exerts far greater influence on Facebook than Russia does on Telegram.phuketrichard wrote: ↑Fri Jun 30, 2023 12:29 pm

perhaps merge these??
Moreover, Telegram surpasses Facebook Messenger in quality and has become the de facto standard for governmental, corporate, and private businesses in Cambodia for many years already.

I shirley beg to differ , I never heard of that telegram BS , I never used it !
I would never have facebook in amerika and only made it here because that’s all we get to meet girls
( with a fake name of course for a couple reasons ) to meet girls .. they wouldn’t be able to say orpronounce my real name anyway and I don’t want my old classmates to look me up anydays .
The facebook messenger is invaluable for everything . I even contact my bank in. America and ask them to call me back by phone because we don’t have toll free calls here .. wtf is telegram now ? Clue me in

Re: Facebook in Asia
wow;
Cambodia expels Facebook representatives from Cambodia and cessation of all company representation activities with the government and private sector partnerships in Cambodia from now on for irregularities of its service on Cambodian users & political interference.
as most likely 75+% of Cambodian business's use fb ( just guessing) would He kick them out, just cause they banned him?
i always have used Whats app an see no reason to switch to telegram and as both apps are basically for communicating with friends
what replaces fb for He to get his messages out?

YET!!!At a public event in Cambodia on Friday, Mr. HE said that his political opponents outside the country were surely happy with his decision to quit Facebook.
“You have to be aware that if I order Facebook to be shut down in Cambodia, it will strongly affect you,” he added, speaking at an event for garment workers ahead of the general election. “But this is not the path that I choose.”

My cynical view is that the 75+% are of little consequence to certain echelons when making important decisions.
On the upside, people might learn how to use a telephone properly. Unlikely, though.

Re: Facebook in Asia
If Facebook ceases to be available, for whatever reason, people and businesses will switch to other platforms. Businesses might even set up their own websites, as they tend to do elsewhere. They simply don't have any reason to look for alternatives yet, as "everyone is on Facebook".
Just don't ban TikTok at the same time and there won't be an uprising. Easy.

Apparently, he would, and will:

My guess is that Facebook (if banned) will only be blocked until after the election, since a.) Too many people use it (major corporations like KFC don't even have a presence here without it) and b.) His son uses it, and even posted within hours of his own father's announcement.Khmer Times wrote:PM HE warns opposition: Don’t make me ban Facebook in Cambodia

Prime Minister HE told opponents today that ‘I will shut down Facebook, if you are arrogant’, following his own departure from the social media platform yesterday
The PM made his remarks while talking to a crowd of workers from 10 factories in Pursat province today
The Premier told the nearly 7,000 workers who gathered in the meeting, “I deleted yesterday my Facebook account, which has 14 million followers, and the opposition is happy. Don’t forget, if I issue an order, Facebook will be closed in Cambodia, and you will be the losers.”
“But that is not the way HE functions. Do not underestimate HE’s strategy. All the 14 million people on my Facebook account can be connected through Telegram. Then there is TikTok, which already has 300,000 followers and it can go up to 52 million people.”
Mr HE added, “This is to warn the foreigners that I will shut down Facebook, if you are arrogant. I will shut down Facebook in Cambodia for a short time or permanently. I do not want to hurt the people, but you must not be confused with HE’s strategy.”
Prime Minister said that the opposition abroad use the same Facebook for communication, and if Facebook is shut, it will be over. He urged people to download WhatsApp, Viber and other social networking platforms, including TikTok, in case they cannot communicate via Facebook. AKP
Of course, Meta could choose to escalate and play a game of Chicken with the Prime Minister, but I highly doubt that will happen, since Zuckerberg seems far less politically motivated in his strategy than other tech CEOs (e.g, Jack Dorsey).

I said back in June, that he'd ban Facebook within a week if he was given a ban.
