Mega.co.nz offers 50gb for free with end to end encryption.

With the others you can always encrypt the files before you sync

Yes, the interface between my devices and the cloud is where I have the most concern. Thanks to clippy and StroppyChops for the owncloud reference. I'll look into that. So far my approach has simply been to not put anything sensitive in the cloud, despite the advantages of doing so.

It's interesting to note the vastly different costs of commercial cloud storage - Dropbox is $9.99 a month for 100Gb, Google is only $1.99 a month for 100Gb. I trust Dropbox more than Google but Google is hard to beat for convenience and integration.

OK; some of my objections to anything in the cloud,
when Uncle sam wants something , you think the cloud storage wont roll over and grant access? I far prefer my external hard drives
Doesn't matter i if i have anything that is sensitive or not i do not want anyone to have access to any of my info for whatever reason.

yes its cheap FOR NOW, so u place ur stuff up there an din a year, 2, 3 it goes to $50/month, than 100... no thanks
Look at how they have pressured the foreign banks into giving ups citizens accounts

Adobe just moved their new release of Photoshop ONLY in the cloud, no software to load, Yes its cheap, and u say ok, but once u start using it and get all ur photos up there, they can charge whatever they wish and ur stuck Once again NO thanks.

Yes you can but encrypting individual files before syncing is a PITA.

Agreed. But fact of the matter is Google drive is reliable and works well.

The only files I encrypt are my documents relation to my family law case. Don't need Google to target me with ads for more lawyers...

You're using the term 'cloud' like it's a single, commercial product... ?

if the government really wants your data they'll take it. period.

they'll send armed guys to your house at 4am and kick you out of bed, snag your hardware, and take the data, then their crackers will crack it. and when you have the barrel of a gun in your face at 4am, i'm willing to bet you'll be rolling over and letting them as well.

cloud is a brilliant concept made possible by advancing bandwidth technology. computer crashes? no problem... it's just an interface device. have a desktop, laptop, 2 phones, google glass, e-reader and a tablet? they're just various interface devices and the data/software exists equally and consistently for all of them.

paranoia and secrecy are these new trendy things everyone freaks out about, but honestly privacy is higher than it ever was... simply because of obscurity. you really are THAT insignificant in the grand scheme of things because there are 7 billion other people out there... most of them probably more interesting to government watchdogs.

^ OD is not exaggerating, happened to me over 20 years ago (although the Internet looked a little younger in those days and the cloud wasn't even a concept).

Sorry, but this is related...

My Samsung Android phone has an option to encrypt it. Says it will takes hours to do.

I've always wanted to do that, but does it slow things down? Will it take an extra 30 minutes to boot it up every time or anything like that?
