Cambodia's 1st undersea communications cable to be operational early next year

PHNOM PENH, Oct. 25 (FN) -- The Cambodia's first undersea communications cable is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2017, according to a press release on Tuesday.

The Malaysia-Cambodia-Thailand (MCT) submarine cable is jointly invested by Telcotech (an EZECOM company) of Cambodia, Symphony Communication of Thailand and Telekom Malaysia Berhad, and has been built by China's Huawei Marine Networks, a global submarine network provider, since May last year at the cost of about 70 million U.S. dollars.

MCT cable system spans approximately 1,300 km and will position Cambodia as the gateway to Asia which enables Cambodia to harvest the Asia traffic and extend the connectivity to ASEAN and the rest of the world via Malaysia, the press release said.

It said that the MCT cable system will land in Sihanoukville, Cambodia; Rayong, Thailand, and Kuantan (Cherating), Malaysia, respectively.

"The landing stations in all three countries are completed and ready to receive cable," it said...

That's great news. I hope the increase in international bandwidth will result in increased bang for buck for internet plans.

Seems crazy that I can have fibre to the house, but can only afford ADSL-like speeds on it because faster=prohibitive.

bigger bandwidth, chop it up and distribute to various small ISP, then ISP chop it up even more and distribute to non licensed companies, non licensed companies market it at same price now, when have problem they just fold and register new company :beer3:

Better internet for Cambodia
Mon, 28 November 2016

Ezecom subsidiary Telcotech is expected to finish building and deploying Cambodia’s first undersea fibre-optic cable in early 2017, connecting to the Malaysia-Cambodia-Thailand (MCT) cable from a landing point in Sihanoukville. The Post’s Matthieu de Gaudemar sat down with Ezecom CEO Yves Schaeffer to discuss how the cable will improve internet services in the Kingdom and affect the local ISP market...

I'm following the undersea cable issue from the perspective of Vietnam, which desperately needs better connectivity than the cursed Asia America Gateway, with a skimpy 2.8 Tb/sec capacity.

Two massively better cables are under construction linking Vietnam and the world, and hence, Cambodia. The short Malaysia-Cambodia-Thailand (MCT) cable system will eventually hook onto the 54 terabytes per second capacity Asai Pacific Gateway, just finished, and the Asia Africa Europe cable, almost finished.

Here's a link to the MCT: http://www.submarinecablemap.com/#/subm ... -mct-cable

This is a fully interactive site for ALL undersea cables operating around the world.

First submarine cable launched

Cambodia’s first submarine telecoms cable, costing $100 million, that will strengthen existing internet capacity and greatly increase connectivity speed at lower cost, was officially launched yesterday.

The 1,300-km long fiber optic cable system is a joint-venture between Cambodia’s Telcothech, a subsidiary of EZECOM, Malaysia-based Telekom Malaysia Berhad and Thailand-based Symphony Communication Public Company Limited.
Dubbed as the MCT (Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand) cable, it has a capacity of at least 30 Terabits per second.

According to Paul Blanche-Horgan, CEO of EZECOM Telcotech, the MCT cable has three pivotal landing stations – Sihanoukville in Cambodia, Rayong in Thailand and Kuantan in Malaysia.
“It gives us a direct route from Cambodia to Malaysia, Thailand and beyond to Singapore, China’s Hong Kong, and the rest of the world,” said Mr. Balance-Horgan.
“With this $100 million joint venture, Cambodia will experience faster and more reliable internet speed, the effect of which will trickle down through the whole industry all the way to Cambodian end-users,” he added.

Mr. Balance-Horgan said the MCT cable will also connect to other submarine systems, including Telcothec – the only Cambodian member of the Asia-America Gateway – and the 20,000-km long submarine communication cable which links Southeast Asia to the United States.

Moa Chakrya, chairman of the Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia, told Khmer Times earlier that Cambodia currently is only connected via landlines to neighboring countries, and the new submarine cable will both increase internet speeds, and lower costs...
