Thailand wants us killed: Bitcoin couple Nadia Summergirl and Chad Elwartowski who lived in ocean shack
Supranee Thepdet and Chad Elwartowski envisaged a world without governments when they went to live on a tiny oil rig-like structure 14 nautical miles out to sea
But the dream went south when the Thai navy showed up to accuse them of establishing a breakaway nation

No markets, no capitalism, no governments, no rent. That was the dream when Nadia Summergirl and her boyfriend Chad Elwartowski decided to swap their former lives as bitcoin investors for a life at sea, setting up in an isolated shack 14 nautical miles off the coast of Thailand.
And things had seemed to be going so smoothly – until Saturday, that is, when the Thai navy turned up to accuse them of trying to establish a breakaway nation, an offence punishable by death.
Summergirl, whose real name is Supranee Thepdet, and her boyfriend were the poster couple of seasteading, whose proponents envisage escaping nations and laws by living on floating islands in international waters.
About a month ago, the couple filmed themselves as a fishing boat towed out their tiny, oil-rig like structure from the shores of Phuket and headed into the Andaman Sea. In doing so, they became the first couple to live out the vision of the Seasteading Institute, a self-styled “non-profit think-tank promoting the creation of floating ocean cities as a revolutionary solution to some of the world’s most pressing problems: rising sea levels, overpopulation, poor governance”.
Unfortunately for them, the idea appeared a little too revolutionary to the Royal Thai Navy Third Area Command officers who landed on their tiny hexagonal shack to accuse them of using the proceeds of bitcoin deals to establish a micronation that could “have negative repercussions” on Thailand’s shoreline, even though it is technically two miles beyond Thai sovereignty, in international waters.
But the Thai authorities were too late. By the time they arrived, the couple had already abandoned their idyllic vision to go on the run.
They have been charged in absentia with article 119 of the Thai Criminal Code, which bars any acts that cause the country or parts of it to fall under the sovereignty of a foreign state or a deterioration of the state’s independence. Under the code, such acts are punishable by death or life imprisonment.

"there former lives as bitcoin investors"? They obviously got their market timing a bit wrong, otherwise they would be in Dubai/Cayman Islands/Singapore etc where they could enjoy their loot without being bothered by taxmen.
The ought to of buffed up on their understanding of international maritime law too.

They could tow it a bit further, put it in Malaysian waters, and convert it into a sea-stay, so people can rent a room at sea.
## I thought I knew all the answers, but they changed all the questions. ##

Re: Bitcoin Seasteading Couple on the Run From Thai Navy
He is now facing the DEATH penalty
death for taking selfies with airplanes taking off at phuket,
death for trying a new lifestyle
A bit overboard i'd say
wowBANGKOK (Reuters) - The Thai navy on Saturday boarded the floating cabin of a fugitive U.S. citizen and his Thai girlfriend, both prominent members of the "seasteading" movement who possibly face the death sentence for setting up their offshore home.
Thai authorities have revoked the visa of bitcoin trader Chad Elwartowski and charged him and his partner with violating Thai sovereignty by floating the cabin 14 nautical miles off the west coast of the Thai island of Phuket.
The cabin had been promoted as the world's first seastead by the group Ocean Builders, part of a movement to build floating communities beyond the bounds of nations as a way to explore alternative societies and governments.

it does seem a bit dangerous, no lights and siting in a sea lane

Before raid, 'seasteaders' planned floating resort off Thailand
29 April 2019 - Reuters
BNB ON THE SEA
Ocean Builders had planned advance sales of 20 more floating homes, at a construction cost of US$150,000-US$200,000 per unit due to the engineering challenges, according to its website.
Initial designs were for multi-floor cylinders "with the option for a ladder, spiral staircase or an elevator to go from floor to floor," the website said.
The navy raid came two days before Ocean Builders planned to launch the advance sale, called an Initial Seastead Offering or ISeaO, on Apr 15.
The sale was postponed, but the group had already received orders for an underwater restaurant and three "SeaBnBs", bungalow type hotel units, and 300 requests for information, Ocean Builders said.
It did not respond to Reuters' requests for comment.
A founder of the seasteading movement, U.S. libertarian theorist Patri Friedman, said he had spoken with members of Ocean Builders about ambitious plans for an offshore resort.
"Their goal was to get a floating community together of different people living in these new kinds of floating homes, maybe do some AirBNB style – SeaBNB – to bring in more tourists to see the natural beauty of Thailand," he said.
