New iPhone Feature Will Alert You If You're Being Stalked

The new feature, discovered in the iOS 14.5 beta, will warn Apple users when an unknown item traveling with them is being tracked through the Find My app.

According to Apple blogger and iOS developer Benjamin Mayo, a forthcoming feature will alert iPhone owners if someone hides an AirTag — an anticipated new tracking device similar to Tile — in their belongings. "This is how Apple is trying to prevent 'stalking' with AirTags," Mayo wrote on Twitter.

Key Details: Item Safety Features, as it's known, is on by default; to turn it off, users must consent that "The owner of an unknown item will be able to see your location and you will no longer receive notifications when an unknown item is found moving with you." Apple has reportedly been developing AirTags since April 2019. There have been numerous news reports of victims being stalked via AirTag-like tracking devices.
